You guys, I have to get out of lurkdom for this, because if I do not say something this morning, I am going to explode. I am officially done as a Democrat and will be registered independent. I am done trying to support this weak party. I am disgusted with Pelosi for saying that we should MOVE ON from this. How can we move on from this? This man incited a riot that resulted in 4 deaths. He had his lackeys thrash the Congress. How can he do these things and not be removed?
I am a black woman. I have seen BLM protesters assaulted, shot by rubber guns, tear gassed, and arrested at a much higher level than what happened yesterday, all because they didn’t want their men and women being gunned down in there beds or jogging in the street. I have seen our first Black president and First Lady raked through the coals for putting his feet up on a desk and her having the gall of saying that children should eat healthier. And this man gets away with THIS?!? With countless other things in the past 4 years?!? This is White privilege at the most depraved and disgusting. Fuck all of them who choose to move past this.
This was supposed to be a happy time today, as the Democrats have the Senate, House, and Presidency back. But you know what, fuck them too. They are weak and spineless, and they are slightly less complicit than the Republicans for what went on yesterday. I am disgusted, angry, and hurt. This is not my country and this is not my party.

I’ve been disappointed by the Democratic Party for years. They are barely better than the Republicans, and yet so much less effectual. Despite winning control of the executive and legislative branches, I have little faith they will accomplish a damn thing worthwhile before mid-terms in two years.

Part of the reason Democrats are less effectual than Republicans it that Republicans get in line and support their leaders, whereas this is the response that Democrats get 12 seconds after they win elections and before their new executives have actually taken office. Pelosi isn't the party - she's one Congress person, and actually a fairly canny strategist. I also want to see Trump held to account, but I don't know that impeaching him now makes sense. I would rather wait for him to get out of office and then be prosecuted to the full extent possible, by both states and the DoJ.

I figured it would fail because the Republicans stuck together to kill that move, while continuing to support Trump. Now, even after yesterday's events, there are still six senators who continued to double-down on objecting to the legitimacy of the 2020 presidential results. Trying to move forward to impeach Trump now would be dicey. At least, theoretically, after Biden (and Rev. Warnock and Jon Ossoff) are inaugurated, a campaign to impeach Trump may get more traction because the Democrats would have the numbers to counteract obstructionist nonsense. ETA: I'm waiting to see what New York State does once Trump is out of office. NYS Attorney General Leticia (Tish) James has been investigating the Trump Organization for a while. I was skeptical of McConnell's comments yesterday. He tried to distance himself from this nonsense, but it seemed to be too little, too late.

The division within the GOP with the traditional conservatives pitted against the Trump Caucus is fracturing the party. I think it was obvious yesterday that McConnell and McCarthy have both lost control of their members.

I see the Democratic party going in too many different directions which is why they cannot agree on anything, and that might happen to the Republican party as well.

Yeah, exactly. Pelosi and congressional Democrats can now stay above fray and just let the state AGs do their job.
Also, I think saying we're going to move on publicly is the right strategy. I don't want Trump to pardon everyone involved with yesterday.

I don't want Trump to pardon everyone involved with yesterday. If Pelosi and the Congressional Democrats were to continue to harp on yesterday's coup beyond a certain point, that may embolden that mob of thugs even more. Tucker Carlson from Fox News already made comments that some people in power will use yesterday's events as an "excuse" to impose more restrictions on citizen's "freedom". Trying to bring down the hammer right now would play right into those fears. On another note, I also don't want Trump trying to pardon himself!

Trump's mob showed their asses yesterday.
People always point to black folk and say, "look how you all riot!"
Is that so?

After Biden is inaugurated, there won’t be any way to impeach Trump because he won’t be President.
I do think the mood is shifting from “we should all move on and heal” to “Trump and his cronies must be held accountable.” I’m not sure what that looks like—state charges, federal charges?
I long to see Trump in an orange jumpsuit. There are a lot of super important issues the new administration should prioritize—the pandemic, the economy, international relations, voting rights, policing, etc. I think in order to restore any trust in the federal government that somebody somewhere has to go after Trump.
Pardoning Nixon and declaring that “our long national nightmare is over” was a mistake. It gave permission to Trump to behave even more abominably and set a precedent that Presidents are above the law, which should never be the case.
