It has come up in this and many other threads that people who had a similar upbringing or similar family backgrounds do not develop the same problems. But I think this is missing the entire picture. Most mental issues are seen nowadays with a diathesis-stress model; i.e. that a combination of predisposing genetic factors and triggering environment can make psychological symptoms or a mental disorder manifest. So yes, some people who are shuffled around in foster care or otherwise abused/neglected will have the resilience to become happy, productive people, but others will be irreparably damaged by their upbringing because their biological makeup makes it harder for them to process and resolve those childhood issues. Another way I've heard it put is, "Nature loads the gun and nurture pulls the trigger." I think it's too simple to conclude that if some people can overcome a messed-up childhood, all people should be able to. Who knows what Courtney Love's problem is. I think angelaudie's idea that she finds sobriety boring might be true. If she's been flooding her neurological reward centers with drugs and high drama for years and years, the comparatively mundane pleasures of sober life are probably not all that compelling. This is a grossly simplified explanation of reward deficiency syndrome.

At the same time, I think she craves acceptance/love from others. I remember in her Barbara Walters interview her and Courtney mentioning her mother saying she had this "hole" that needed filling in her soul, hence the name of her band. Heh. That's interesting -- on the BTM, she said that she named Hole after her vagina. Also, if that's the Barbara Walters interview I remember, wasn't she also trying to act all super-ladylike, sipping tea out of some fancy china teacup? In one breath she was telling Barbara how "clean" she was and trying to act all sophisticated (this was during her serious actress phase) but she was clearly stoned out of her mind.

I remember that interview. And she was also keeping Kurt's ashes on top of her Buddhist gohonzon (alter) which is a big no-no in Nichiren Daishonin buddhism.

I fully believe he killed himself and there's no way law enforcement would go along with some sort of conspiracy about lying about the death of some grunge musician. It would be a level of incompetence and evil across all agencies that doesn't remotely ring true. He wasn't a Kennedy, he was just a Cobain. (And I don't even buy the conspiracies surrounding the Kennedys.)
He had such a huge heroin addiction it was perfectly plausible to have that level of drugs in him and not be dead due to an extreme tolerance. Also there were at least six previous suicide attempts on his part in the last couple years before his death, he was determined to kill himself. As fucked up as Courtney is, her actions upon discovery of those attempts looked to me she was trying awfully hard to keep him alive. She's guilty of a lot of things but Kurt's death isn't one of them.

In the bio "Heavier than Heaven" the author reported that not only did Cobain od on heroin but he also shot himself in the head with a shot gun. The guy wanted to die. Cobain ... as someone who has dealt with deep depression most of my life I sorta understand his impulse.

"Unsolved Mysteries" profiled a detective once who was obsessed with the idea Kurt was murdered. He was making it his mission to prove it. Everything he said was discredited by the police but he didn't care. I wonder if he is still trying to prove his theory.
Jeez, thinking about Kurt's death brings back memories. I was only 13 when Cobain died and it didn't actually bother me. But I knew this girl Wendy who was obsessed with him. Just to be mean, her older brother broke the news to her by acting like it was a good thing, yelling excitedly, "Hey Wendy, great news! Kurt Cobain died!" I also remember that some girl wrote into "Sassy" magazine saying she wanted to kill herself because Kurt Cobain was dead. And that "Sassy" also had a contest called "What would you write for Kurt Cobain's epitaph?" (I think this magazine was not the best place to turn for I'm-suicidal-because-Cobain's-dead girl).
As for Courtney, meh, I find her dull. She's just a strung-out junkie who's too selfish to get clean. I am bored with those kinds of people. There are already too many of them in Hollywood.

Anyone who'd pay $45 to see Courtney Love deserves to get burned. The woman can barely walk down the street and you think she'll be able to play a show? *cue Seth and Amy* Really? Really.
Really.

She should have answered, "yes, I'm Af-Am and like rock music, can you tell me where I can see an actual rock concert?"

I can't help but think that she's a bad person. Still, she fascinates me, and I always look forward to her resurgences.
