I read her bio years ago. She was a real firecracker and lived her life to the fullest. I particularly liked her anecdotes about being Marilyn Monroe's roommate. They were the original wild Sex and the City chicks with their "fuck me" shoes and their lists of men they wanted to sleep with. (Interestingly, Shelley's list was full of hunks while Marilyn listed men like Albert Einstein. . I agree with those that said she was great in A Place in the Sun. OMG she was whiny. She actually had me siding with Monty Clift. RIP Ms. Winters.

I loved her!! Still do! Who can forget "You see, Mr. Scott? In the water I'm a very skinny lady!" ?
(BTW, I am so glad that the Poseidon Adventure remake will not have the same characters...nobody can replace Winters as Belle Rosen)
She will be missed/ May she rest in peace.

There was this story I heard her tell in a couple of interviews years and years ago. I always wondered if it was from her bio. She said that she was at some Hollywood party, and a doctor came and took two big name actors (she named names but I don't recall) into a back room and she went and looked in. And the doctor cut a slice into the shoulder of each actor and inserted a tablet. Whoever was interviewing her (Johnny Carson? Tom Snyder?) said they never heard of drugs being administered that way. And she retorted with something along the lines of "well, it happened". I found that story so weird and disturbing that I actually remember it all these years later, and when I thing of Shelley Winters (which is almost never), it is the first thing that I associate with her.

A true loss. She managed to make even the suckiest movies better. Her performance as Mommy in Cleopatra Jones is arguably the best racist, lesbian drug dealer I've ever seen.
As for her classic films, as great as she was in A Place in the Sun, she was even better in A Patch of Blue, as Roseanne, the evil, skanky Mom-From-Hell. How ironic that she went from playing someone named Roseanne to being on the *show* Roseanne. Plus, her Belle Rosen is unforgettable and irreplacable, just like Shelley Winters herself.
RIP, Shelley.

pachouli, how bizarre, that's the first thing I've thought about whenever I heard her name too. Just because it seem like there is no explanation for it. Anyway, she got married 5 hours before she died. By Reverand Sally Kirkland??!!

According to wikipedia, Sally Kirkland is a minister in the "Church of the Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness". That sounds legit . And she's Shelley's goddaughter. Glad I'm not alone in remembering that pill story.
