Ballsy gal is right. Oh, that's so sad. Shelly was a stunner way back in the day—and most awesome as Roseanne's mother.

I read a story in the tabs not too long ago that some scam artist -- a la Martha Raye's husband -- was trying to marry her...hopefully, that didn't happen before she passed.

She was awesome in A Place in the Sun. Her scene in the boat with Montgomery Clift was just, wow.

I don't think I ever saw her in one of her younger movies where she is attractive. The only old movie I saw her in was when she played the shrew mother in A Patch of Blue, but she was already not so good looking. She will always be Belle Rosen from the Poseidon Adventure to me.

I loved her ever since seeing "The Poseidon Adventure" as a kid on TV...and her frequent talk show appearances back in the day were a RIOT. She was BFF with Marilyn at one time, and aside from that a darling of the Actor's Studio, and she apparently slept with a lot of hunks...one of her priceless statements on The Tonight Show: "I was having an affair with an actor at the time...I can't say who---WELL IT WAS BURT LANCASTER!"[this at a time when they were both in their early 60s and still married/active]

A Place in the Sun is on tomorrow afternoon - TCM... catch it if you can. They turned her down for that part several times. So she met the director in a restaurant dressed down and plain. She got the role. She was one of a kind.

On the 6 July, 1972 episode of "Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson", she grew tired of Oliver Reed's attitude towards women. They had a heated conversation and after Shelley told Reed what she thought of his opinions, left the set. The show continued with Oliver Reed still going on about women while Johnny Carson looked at him in a daze. Shortly afterwards, Winters appeared from Stage left, unannounced to Reed and to the shock of Carson. She was carrying a champagne bucket of ice and water with which she surprised Reed by dumping it over his head. Reed was furious over this and tried to attack her but set personal intervened. The show broke for commercial break. When the show resumed both actors were gone.
