Don't go to the Ashley Judd side, Anne. I actually liked you.
That girl can rock bangs something fierce.

What, is Hathaway now channeling Ashley Judd? Or Gwyneth Paltrow? Seriously, depression has totally become the new black among celebrities (I hate to quote Perez Hilton on anything, but...). I think it's a generational thing, really. Our generation (Moore, Hathaway, even Braff) have been told since we were itty bitty that we could do *anything* and have just been overwhelmed with choice. No surprise that when we hit mid-20s and actually have to make decisions we slump into a stupor. Seriously, almost every one I know has been through this - books are even written on it "quarter-life crisis" they call it, I think. Anyway, it's real. I say, yay for celebrities admitting it happens to them too.

What you're describing does seem to be a generational thing, I don't disagree that that particular sort of crisis happens...I just don't think it qualifies as depression (then again, I'm not a medical health professional, so...) and I still think it's become hip to say that one's depressed. I mean, saying that you're having a mid-life crisis (or, fine, a quarter-life crisis) just doesn't have the same ring to it. She could just as easily have said, "Hey, I hit this sort of slump/crisis back then, etc." but depression sounds much cooler. It's probably the cynic in me, but I think that's why a lot of celebs cop to stuff like this--not because they want to bring attention to a disorder, but because they want to bring attention to themselves.
And in Anne's case, she wants to show off how wonderful and mentally strong she really is. She kicked depression without the help of meds, don't you know!

"It's all so negatively narcissistic to be so consumed with self." Hmm. Bitch just made my list. Mine too, The Cupcake Kid! I'm so glad she took it upon herself to reinforce the notion that depressed people are just whiny and self-involved. I hate that mentality *so* much.

Ugh, ugh, ugh what a horribly misleading statement. I too know someone whose Dad was clinically depressed. As everyone else has pointed out Depression is just not feeling really sad and then getting over it. It is actually quite debilitating (sp.?) I know that every teenager goes through a period where they are sad that they aren't what they want to be and I think that's called growing pains, no? I think what some celebs (not all) are describing is typical teenage behaviour. The moodiness, sadness etc is just grwoing up and realizing that yeah life can suck.

Apparently she's parading around Vancouver "in disguise" (so says the local radio, anyway). Someone saw her at the movie theatre with giant sunglasses on.

Is it really necessary for her to be in disguise? She looks so... normal. I doubt she's chased by paparazzi or fans on a regular basis.

Seriously, I probably see a hundred girls a day on my college campus who could pass for her. I remember she said on some talk show once that some guys recognized her on the subway and she heard them say, "Is that the girl from the Princess Diaries? She's not that hot." That about sums her up, IMO. Not offensively unattractive, but nothing special at all.
