Oh, LAWD the Rush, Rush video was THE ultimate thing for me to watch and listen to during its heyday. The speaking parts and Keanu saying them was just dreamy as hell. *giggles like a girl* The imagery was beautiful, too. I think they did two different versions with one being much longer and featured even more of the "Rebel without a Cause" connection in the beginning. Now I have to go over to YouTube and find them. Longer 6 mins Version | Standard Version

I never liked "Rush, Rush" but I will defend the awesomeness that is the video for "Cold Hearted Snake" until I die. And to think back then that was considered "racy". Paula was ahead of her time. Oh, LAWD the Rush, Rush video was THE ultimate thing for me to watch and listen to during its heyday. "Cold Hearted" was out the summer before I turned 13, and I was Paula, Madonna and Janet's BITCH. My mom walked in when I was watching that video and I got a little nervous. We were not a censored family, but still. She stood there for awhile and then proclaimed, "This is DIRTY." And that was it.
There were similar dirty/slutty/etc. comments regarding the "Express Yourself" video. She never stopped me, though.

I remember the video for "Promise of a New Day" got some flack because it looked as if the camera image was deliberately stretched out in order to make Paula look skinnier. In Living Color even did a spoof of it called "Promise of a Thin Me."

Even if Paula was getting a little "chunky" (that was the suspicion, no?), she was still gorgeous. They sould have camouflaged that with proper styling. (I vaguely remember reading in a magazine -maybe one of the teen magazines - back in the day that had analyzed Paula's fashions choices and determined they were all wrong for her petite, curvy frame.)

I was obsessed with her when I was little. Remember those cheesy "music videos" you could do at Six Flags (and probably other theme parks)? My brothers and I did "Opposites Attract". I was Paula. Her dancing was incredible. I remember it was fun to watch Janet Jackson's old videos and pick out which moves were clearly "Paula". I never understood why her pop career fell off so hard, while Janet and Madonna continued on. Some of her material was grade A pop and has stood the test of time, probably most notably "Straight Up" and "Cold Hearted". "Rush Rush" is a beautiful, beautiful ballad. I really liked "Will You Marry Me" too. Not only was it beautiful, but it was a great concept for a song. I actually put "Vibeology" on my Halloween playlist I've been making. That "Viiiiiibeology" spooky choir part was always so bizarre to me. It still makes me go WTF?

Dude, I used to love me some Paula Abdul. I remember my middle-school cheering squad used "Straight Up" for the dance part of our competition routine in 1988. LOL
And "Rush Rush." Swoon.
ETA: And thanks to Paula, I am now Landed Gentry!

I think she got hit with a mini scandal as one of her backup singers accused her of using the backup singer's vocals as her own. I remember it went to court and such but I don't remember how the judge ruled. It probably wouldn't have done too much damage except that Abdul got hit with this lawsuit right smack in the midst of the Milli Vanilli Witch Hunt and so was deemed a fraud regardless of how the law suit actually turned out (To my very vague memory- I think they found that sometimes Paula's voice was enhanced by blending it with the backing vocals- but not that the background singer's voice was used exclusively as a substitute for Paula's in the Milli Vanilli sense) This hit right around the time she was going through a messy divorce with Emilio Estevez and I think Paula lost it a bit... maybe more than a bit. Enough of an emotional blow to derail her career while Janet and Madonna sailed along.
American Idol was her big 'ol comeback- but even then she seemed rather on the fragile side.

Paula's music career was entirely studio-created. Her videos were her strongest asset, so it's not surprising that her career died with them. Plus Nirvana and grunge music completely up-ended the music scene in the early 90s anyway.

I have a HUGE crush on Keanu Reeves, love him. But the "Rush/Rush" video does nothing for me! He was too high and not wrinkly enough for me. I did love Cold Hearted Snake tough, risque (especially because I was like 10 or 11 when I was watching it) but damn if she didn't capture Fosse's dance style. As an adult, about 10 years ago, I saw All That Jazz and saw it was an homage (or rip off) of this.
