I have so many tapes that were strictly singles (remember those?!), so much better than getting a full album which usually consisted of just one or two decent tracks. Cassingles?! I have a ton of those from the late 80s/early 90s.

There was a PE unit at my kids' middle school where each 6th-grader researched a famous athlete or coach, created a presentation, and participated in a "wax museum" exhibit that was open to parents and fellow students. Divaspawn1, having zero interest in sports, found out that some of the girls were researching prima ballerinas and asked if she could research Paula Abdul. She had to go all the way to the principal for permission because nobody else realized that Paula was a choreographer/dancer--they just knew her as the chemically-impaired judge on American Idol. The principal enthusiastically encouraged ds1 to go ahead with Paula, with the caveat that she focus on Paula's dance and choreography career and not mention AI. She was the hit of the exhibit--she dressed in Paula's big-shouldered, belted suit jacket over black tights and tap shoes, and posed in different positions from the Straight Up videos, tap-dancing from one pose to the next when it was time to move. Her display listed all of Paula's awards and featured lots of pics of her working with Janet Jackson and the Laker Girls. So much fun... OMG how cool!! Do you have any pictures?? Her chemically-impaired AI stint notwithstanding, I thought she was a pretty talented dancer/choreographer back in the day. And that takes serious athletic skill, so good on ds1 for pushing it to get to do her presentation on Paula.

I have a ton of those from the late 80s/early 90s. I have an entire small trunk filled with 'em. I keep meaning to buy a cassette to MP3 converter but haven't yet. That will be a heck of project. O/T: Paula Abdul was an amazing dancer, and I loved her pop songs when I was a kid. Didn't she date Arsenio Hall? I seem to remember him from the "Forever Your Girl" video.

I seem to remember a lot of him pointing up or something. divasahm, I agree on seeing a video or photos or something! That sounds just amazing. Kudos to you for raising such an awesome kid!

My bad--You're right. It was the "Straight Up" video he was in. Thanks, YouTube.

Yes, he was in the "Straight Up" video. That's a great video too, but it would probably be my fourth favorite Abdul video after "Rush Rush," "Opposites Attract," and "Cold Hearted". Although I did like the kids in "Forever Your Girl" too since I was close to most of their ages when that video came out, so I love that one too. "Straigt Up" is great too though because of Arsenio's laughing, and it reminds me of when I thought his show was good. I tried watching his latest show hoping it would be as good as his old show, but I didn't even get any laughs from it.

I know she and Arsenio dated- but I don't know if it ever got super serious. I think they hooked up around the time she did the choreography for the big wedding dance scene in Coming To America and fizzled out around the time she started her singing career. I'm not sure if they were still a couple at the time he was in 'Straight Up' or if they were 'just friends' at that point.
I remember on his talk show (1st version) he had Carrie Fisher on as a guest and she was talking about her divorce from Paul Simon. She said that 'Graceland' and 'Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes' were written about her. Then she asked Arsenio if anyone had ever written a song about him and he said "Yeah. 'Cold Hearted Snake'!" Whether he was serious or joking, I don't know... But I do know he and Paula were done done done by the time she came out with Cold Hearted Snake.

I think Paula and Arsenio were coy about the nature of their relationship when "Straight Up" came out. I remember Paula appearing on the Arsenio Hall Show v 1.0 but by then it seemed that the relationship had ended (and it was the elephant in the room). Didn't Arsenio make comments years later about Paula being the one who had gotten away?
