I was curious after hearing so much about her and downloaded some songs today - LOVE her, love her voice.
But it is incredibly disturbing to see her wasting away like that. She's such a real talent. She looked fine in the "before" photo!

First off, I don't like Christina's take on soul music. She can sing. She can immitate, but she does not come close. Heck, Whitney doesn't even do it for me, when it comes to soul music. I like my soul hot buttered or neo, not what comes out of Christina or Whitney's mouth. Whitney is more R&B and pop, not soul.
Number one, there were no soul singers at the Grammys, other than Mary J (who has a touch of Hip Hop), everyone else, who performed were either straight R&B, Hip Hop, or rappers.
Some people like to interchange R&B for soul and that's all right, but when soul was soul (late 50s to mid 70s), the sound was distinctly different.
A true "soul" artist is one that no. one. can. dispute.
Aretha is a soul singer. Otis Redding - soul singer. Sam Cooke - soul singer. James Brown - soul singer.
Angie Stone - soul singer. Lela James - soul singer. Al Green - soul singer.
R&B singers are Bryan Mcknight, Toni Braxton, Whitney, Teena Marie, R Kelly and etc.
Hip Hop artists are: R Kelly, Mary J, Chris Brown, and singers of that ilk.
Notice some singers are on more than one list.
When it comes to our girl Amy, she is a throwback. What category would I place her in, is really up in the air. When she is on point, she fits in the category of an Etta James or a Nina Simone in my opinion.
Christina, to me, is the Mc Donald's version of soul/R&B. Yes, a familiar ingredient or two gets churned into the mix, but what you actually get is a formulated version of soul/R&B. That's enough for some people, but I grew up on soul music, and Christina does not have it.

Did anyone catch her on Letterman performing Rehab? She was slurring her words a bit and looked a hot mess. When Dave came up to greet her, she kind of jumped, like he had just apparated or something. She's such a strange girl but her album is receiving raves in America.

Eeeeugh. That makes me a little glad I missed that. I adore her music. I'm sick of "Rehab" though. What was she doing performing that- I thought "You Know I'm No Good" was her new single here in the US?
I'd love to catch her on tour but I'm a bit wary about making the effort to go see someone who is so hit and miss with live performances. It would be easy to catch her on an "off" night.

I bought her album today. I love it; it deserves all of the critical praise it is getting. My favorite tracks so far (besides Rehab and You Know I'm No Good) are Back To Black and Love Is A Losing Game. The CD is only 10 tracks long but you can listen to the majority of them; it's not a disk full of filler.
I wonder how her CD will sell. On the positive side, there are the great reviews and the cheap price of the disk, but on the negative side there is the fact that her single isn't getting any airplay and she's not very well known here. I just checked on Amazon and she's currently the #1 seller. That probably doesn't mean much but I'd be thrilled to see her debut highly on the Billboard chart next week.

She really deserves fame, money, respect, and so on - she has the talent to back it up. But my black shrivelled heart is upset, because once she becomes big in the States, it will no longer be "cool" for me to like her.

Not dead? Never heard her tunes, but I think she's nasty. Total crackhead.

I really like her music, and I really want her to clean up. Although I'm afraid she's making this crackhead thing part of her shtick. But what I'm really worried about is the eyeliner. That has got to go. Pronto.
