I love her music and downloaded it from iTunes. But those pictures of her and the videos of her performances are scary. Most of the time the artists I like sound better live than recorded, she's an exception.

You should. Her songs are really good. Its weird. I hate her as a person--because I think she is a total crackhead. But damn, I love her voice. I think she's trying to be too much of a character. And her voice is no big whoop. People make a big deal about her because "she sounds black". No she doesn't. She sounds like someone trying to imitate that she has soul. Her and Joss Stone; ain't raising no hell with their watered down interpretation of "soul". Both wantabe Janet Joplins. They sure as hell can't say they want to be Aretha. People would just laugh at them. They are so lame. Ha

Her voice is so bizarre, but I really like it.
And also, I really enjoy her cover of Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow. I think she did a really good job of that song.
But for the love of God, could somebody please make her get rid of the beehive hair and crazy eyes. It is so unfortunate looking.

I enjoy her crazy-lady beehives, eyeliner, and tattoos. It may not be the most traditionally flattering look, but I like it on her for some reason. It's nice seeing a pop star who isn't cookie cutter. It would be different if she weren't an entertainer; styling herself like that would just look ridiculous. But she's in a position where she can act out through her appearance, and it's actually appropriate for her line of work. It's cool that she just goes for it.

I don't mind her look, I just wish she'd stop tugging at her hair and hiking up her dress when she's performing, and that she'd take the marbles out of her mouth (i.e. be sober) when singing live.
I really like her voice and vocal stylings a lot but I agree, she's nothing that special. But in my mind, she doesn't have to be that special, she's plenty good enough. I just really like jazzy/bluesy vocalists, probably because I'm one myself, so the more the merrier. I don't know why every single one that hits the scene has to be compared and rated with the greatest ones ever. I don't think they're "wannabe" anybodys. They do their own thing and the only similarity is that their genre is that sort of nebulous category that encompasses jazz, blues, and soul—technically it's R&B, but who cares about labels? Let them just be who they are and viva la difference. I don't know why everybody, especially white women who enjoy singing in this style, are always put down so harshly.
It's Janis. And I don't think either of them are going for Janis's thing. Their voices and styles are completely different.

I'm still shocked that she's younger than me. She looks 38. Frightening.

I can't see her being a big hit in the US. She's not a personable performer at all.
I saw her on Letterman Monday night. She doesn't really engage the audience. It is like she's playing some character that she thinks should work. It doesn't. No stage presence. The songs are strong enough on their own without the schtick. Plus -- the music videos from her that I've seen so far have all been lackluster. I mean... "F** Me Pumps" is a really funny narrative that could have made for a great video. It's just her walking with a microphone.
Having great music doesn't equal big sales. *holds up Ashlee Simpson picture* Few care unless you "look cool". LOL
Coupled with having a well known drug abuse problem and a history of unreliability to gigs... I just don't see a big swell for Winehouse here. I don't think I'd pay to see her perform live...unless the tickets were relatively cheap.

I just got the CD and I love it! On a vocal and stylistic level she's what Christina Aguilara(?) wishes she were. I hope she finds success here, but really hope she tames her demons.
She a great soul singer. For me if an artist really has that gift you can feel it when they sing. I feel it with her.
