Yes and yes.
Re: Whether Amy is a soul singer
As I stated earlier, I think she is another category. If you had to place her somewhere, I would say she's more of a jazz singer; a place I would put Nina Simone.

I downloaded some of her tunes after reading about her here, and I think she's fantastic. I can't contribute to the soul/not soul argument, but I still think she's great. Frankly I don't want her to be a huge success, I want her to be able to maintain some artistic integrity without worrying about the commercialism or marketability of her music.

I stuck one of her songs on my myspace page, and had 8 different people tell me my song was awesome and who was she yesterday, so she could make it. She got a great write-ups in the new Entertainment Weekly and Blender. Oh, and thanks to ya'll for introducing me to her.

I love "Rehab" but I'll never ever get over the trauma of this picture.

I think she'll do well here. I don't know why she wouldn't; her music is a little different but I don't think it's nearly as inaccessible to the American public as a lot of great British pop music is (unfortunately). I love "Rehab" but I'll never ever get over the trauma of this picture. The accompanying write-up disturbs me more than the pic. I guess that's supposed to be a joke, but I'm not laughing.

I put her song Back To Black on my Myspace page a few weeks ago, and people did the same thing to me too. I agree she could do really well in the States, at least I hope so. I think she's phenomenal.

She will have marginal success in the US at best. Why? - She's dirty looking and inarticulate. And do I dare mention. Ugly! (Yes, I know - cruel - but it's my truth as I know it. You may disagree, but I'm betting if you took her pictures and polled the average man and women on the street - they would agree with me. She's a hot mess) Yikes!

Hi everyone, so glad to see Amy getting some love. We are crazy about Amy in my house (my favorite is Wake up Alone). My husband discovered her about three months ago and both of her cds are in constant rotation. He put her music on his myspace page and got alot of positive feedback. We now have about ten family members hooked as well. We were thirsty for something different and haven't been this excited about a new artist since 'Who is Jill Scott?'. I like artist who have interesting lyrics and some of them are very funny. Sorry about her many issues and hopes she pulls it together. I hear she is making an effort to stay sober during gigs. Afterwards who knows. I'm currently giving Back to Black a little break by listening to Frank, lol. I must play Take the Box about 3x a day. Since my three year old has learned the chorus to 'Back to Black' and 'Just Friends', we think its best we also get the clean version before she picks up anything else lol. Unfortunatly my little girl is more animated with the lyrics than Amy, hopefully her stage performances will improve. But I have found some fantastic live acoustic performanes on Youtube as well as a great live 'I Heard Love is Blind'.

Mr. HC and I heard a small snippet of her "Rehab" song today on NPR, which I'm assuming was the chorus (They tried to make me go to rehab, I said no no no), and we both cracked up laughing at how ridiculous it sounded. I assume that the song gets more interesting and she's a talented artist, since so many of you guys like her. I guess it was just a horrible choice for a "Here's this new artist, Amy Winehouse" piece.

I don't get the rehab thing. Is she being ironic? She obviously does need to go to rehab.
