I confused Mike with Dick Cavett, since I know both only from John Lennon's appearances on their shows. I was about to come here and post about his hilarious cameo on The Simpsons where he kept annoying Homer by sharing his anecdotes: "I have some wonderful stories about other famous people that include me in some way." But then I searched Google and that was Cavett.
There are some cool Mike Douglas clips on Youtube, though.

He died at 5:30 a.m. in a Palm Beach Gardens hospital, said his wife, Genevieve Douglas. She wasn't sure of the cause, but said he had been admitted Thursday.
Well, damn .. how can his wife not know the cause of death? Sounds like it was sudden .. sigh.
Damnit, I JUST looked him up the other day. We couldn't remember if he had died or not.
The John and Yoko shows are classic. All about peace and love - with sweet, gentle Mike just listening to them and letting them say anything they wanted.

I haven't read anything bad about this man. He seemed loves by all. I remember the week that John Lennon co-hosted...seems so strange but he must have really like Mike. What a rare and dying breed. RIP Mike. I hope your heaven has that really groovy 70's set that your show had.

Awww. I remember watching him as a pre-schooler. Vaguely remember that he seemed very nice and oddly enough remember him mentioning his wife a lot. Cool that they stayed together all those years.
Mostly I think I remember his f-ugly set. IF I'm remembering the right one, because, I too, confused him and Merv. Didn't MD have the super ugly (in the super way that ONLY late sixties and early seventies decor could BE ugly) flower like thingies stuck all over the wall, similar to the Dating Game? Wasn't this the same set that Seinfeld's Kramer bought to use for his own personal-unaired- talk shows with friends?

If you're feeling nostalgic for the show, you can see some great clips (and also the sets) at www.themikedouglasshow.com. There's two-year-old Tiger Woods, and a bunch of other folks: David Letterman, Jay Leno, Billy Crystal, Billy Joel, Anthony Hopkins, Aretha Franklin, Andy Kaufman, Nixon...you name it. Godspeed, Mike, and thanks for a lot of fun afternoons.

The amazing thing about the Tiger Woods clip is there are Bob Hope and Jimmy Stewart watching him.
Sigh. Movie stars just aren't what they used to be. Who would we see now? Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn?
