I think it's more like what deinira said, that people have different ideas of what constitutes feminism and she didn't want to be associated with someone else's idea of what it is. I'm sure she knows what feminism is.

I don't think Gavin really cares if she writes songs about Tony. I never thought that Gavin seemed all that into her anyway. She's like his meal ticket at this point.

I always think Gavin when I hear Underneath it all and Bathwater. It's like she thinks/knows he settled for her or something.
This especially sound like she knows he's a cheater
You've used up all your coupons And all you've got left is me And somehow I'm full of forgiveness I guess it's meant to be
Or maybe I just over analyze

I kind of like one to the dresses, but she really needs to lose the ghetto/street accessories: the knit caps, the plaid boxers with pants pulled down several inches over them. That look is stupid on men.
I didn't mind Gwen before she became the omnipresent fashionista--somewhere around 2002--but, yeah, the woman who wrote "I'm just a girl" 10 years ago doesn't know what a feminist is? It drives me crazy that successful women are so threatened by that word. I am the same age as Gwen. Feminism is just the belief that women should have the same rights as men. What female (Phillis Schafly aside) wouldn't be for that?

Well, I finally waited for this thread to come back to the forefront of rotation (too lazy to look for it), but I just get exasperated by "Cool".
Isn't it nice that she's letting Tony date? Isn't it nice that she's fine with it? Isn't it nice that she's playing nice in the video with Tony's girl?
Shoot me in the head. Seriously.
And, there's just something so phony about this "fashion maven" nonsense she's doing right now. She was in the "Fashion Rocks!" magazine looking all glam. Did she pick that up after playing Jean Harlow ("Look at me! I'm old-school classic beauty with my platinum-blonde hair! Just like Harlow!" She looks better as a brunette anyway)? I mean, what with her Harajuku-inspired clothing (pick a style, Gwen...either gutter-snipe or lady-of-the-manor, but don't sell us one and wear the other), I just ain't buyin' it.
Sorry, she just really irks me.

I've also read (here? the place-that-shall-not-be-named?) that "Ex-Girlfriend" was about Gavin when they had broken up for a time.
"Hella Good" always seemed weird to me because of:
A performance deserving a standing ovation And who would've thought it'd be the two of us
seems to imply that their sex life sucks.

Oh, and Gwen tells a story of Gavin walking in on her with some girlfriends with his shirt off and she says," Baby, you can't walk around like that We've got a group of horny women in here!" or something to that effect.
Would anyone say that to their spouse of three years? It's just creepy. What a insecure man he must be.

Moldy Tofu on "Holloback Girl:" No, it's not your imagination. And I feel for Batmom, whose son thinks the lyrics are just the greatest. Exactly. People, when the barn door has been left open for years and the horses have already emigrated to Japan, it's a little late to claim privacy issues. Jodie Foster has the right idea. Don't talk about it. Consistently. But if you've made a habit of discussing your personal life publicly, don't whine when they ask you about it. Yes, you are.I heart Sars.

I don't so much "heart Sars" but that's a pretty good way to define feminism. On Topic- I too miss Old School Gwen. Cute little So-Cal chick who was in a little band. Her goofy pink hair, her goofy blue hair. The sparkly jewelry. The fun, bouncy songs about pretty serious things. The little bit o' baby fat she still had. I even liked her on the Behind the Music episode even though I did think even then she was a little low on the IQ and logic quotients. A toothpick probably fascinates her for hours. No offense to the So-Cal's on the board but lots of people from Southern California seem that way - cute but pretty stupid. I don't even mildly like New School Gwen. I hate her fashion. She looks stupid. She's in her thirties and needs to stop dressing like she's 16. Her stylist must be colour blind with no sense of logical fashion. Her blond hair looks terrible. I'm always of the opinion that being a bleach blonde is fine for your teens and twenties than it starts to age you prematurely. Gwen is a perfect example of that. She needs to stop writing songs about how her ex boyfriends suck or how she forgives them for cheating or how they cheated in the first place. It doesn't show any sort of growth in her lyric writing. She does seem stuck on Tony and how he broke up with her when she needs to let it go already. Oh, and I will never forgive her for the bastardized version of "If I were a Rich Man" she did. A song in "Fiddler on the Roof" about an illiterate Jewish dairy farmer in Russia dreaming about what a better life he could give his wife and children if he were rich. Gwen makes it into how she could buy cool clothes and stuff if she were rich. Good Lord. She needs to grow up and go back to making music with No Doubt.

Auroranorth, thank you. I hadn't seen that before, but that's brilliant. Amen, amen, amen.
