Ooh, I like that -- I would've just skipped the performance altogether, but hey.

I think that what Ellen is doing is very bad. She is around my age (I'm in my late forties) and old enough to remember how actors for years weren't paid anything when a show went into syndication. I'm not in show business but I remember reading how an actor who was in a show in the 1950's saw himself on TV about five times in one day and realized that somebody was getting a lot of money and it wasn't him.
I believe that's what the writers are striking for, to be able to get their fair share of the profits when shows are downloaded, watched online and on DVD. I've never really been a fan of Ellen because something about her rubbed me the wrong way. Oh well.

Neuro brings up a very good an important point about syndication. The video that some of the striking writers made (click on my sig line) uses the writers of I Love Lucy to further illustrate the example. That show has been rerun countless times in dozens of countries for decades. Did its writers receive residuals? No. Can you imagine the millions that they could have been paid, money that they earned? Someone(s) made money off I Love Lucy - why couldn't it be shared with those who helped make it such a hit?
Topic: Ellen better get some new panties, because this is going to bite her in the butt for years.

I just saw a story on Yahoo (which now seems to have disappeared) that Ellen has canceled her shows in New York, in response to the WGA East's comments on her. But what about those fans that were traveling to NY to see her? Could it be that Ellen doesn't really care so much about her fans?

I can't tell if she's really riding the unicycle in the ad for her new show or if it's a stuntperson because the camera angles are so odd. I've always wanted to ride one but never tried because I'm so klutzy but maybe it is doable after all.

Or truly know whats fully going on... The New York cancellations to me seemed to be absolutely about what the WGA East said about her. Didn't they pretty much threaten her? It really shouldn't have anything to do with her wanting to upset her fans, because isn't that one of the reasons why she's still filming her show?

WGA East only said they were going to protest her taping in NYC (i.e., picket outside the studio and such). It's not like it was a personal threat. If she truly felt she'd made an honorable decision to cross the picket line, it wouldn't bother her--or at least it wouldn't stop her.
I think freddydingo's point was that by cancelling her shows in NYC, she is screwing over all the people who have tickets to the NYC tapings, many of whom likely built an entire vacation around it, just like the audiences in LA. Since this is the reason Ellen claimed she couldn't stay away from work for longer than a day when it came to the strike, it's incredibly hypocritical--she's demonstrating that she'll screw over her audiences in a heartbeat if it has to do with her own comfort.

Ahh, totally understand that. Thanks Ginger and freddydingo. It does kinda screw the fans over.

I'm not an Ellen fan. I've seen her show maybe two times. But I don't understand why she was getting so much criticism yet Oprah is not. Oprah is continuing with filming her show. They're both talk shows, what's the difference? What about Tyra Banks and Rachael Ray? Aren't they still filming as well? Is it really all about filming in New York and other cities don't count? I belong to a union myself and I support the writers. I'm genuinely curious. I don't know the difference between Ellen's show and the others and why she has gotten criticized and the others have not.
