how did he not get nominated for that performance in Captain Phillips?!?!? Did the Academy turn off the movie before {Spoiler}that final scene?!?!?! I look forward to the performance that finally does bring him back to the Oscar circle. |

He wasn't? I thought he was! It was a great performance and the last scene of him was better than what most actors give throughout their entire careers.
ETA- It was a Golden Globe nomination. He was robbed.

He did--losing to Dustin Hoffman for "Rain Man." Five noms: Big, Forrest Gump, Philadelphia, Saving Private Ryan and Cast Away--winning two years in a row for FG and Philadelphia. |

I think he should have also gotten a supporting actor award for his drunken baseball coach in A League of Their Own. Shame he wasn't.

Yeah, I really don't understand how A League of their Own was so overlooked, especially Hanks, but also Best Song for either Madonna or Carole King, Best Costume Design and Best Art Direction.
