I'm not defending, but I don't think he said anything about anyone hanging from a tree. He said, "50 years ago, you would have been upside down with a fork in your *ss." To me, the most damaging part is the "50 years ago."
I don't really know what he meant by upside down and fork up your butt, other than some inarticulate allusion to lynching. Not smart, Cosmo.

His "apology" didn't make any sense to me. It sounded like a lot of rambling.

Isn't Jerry trying to do damage control because there's a new Seinfeld DVD season coming out now? I thought that's why he was booked on Letterman to begin with, to promote the new DVD package. And was that not the most BIZARRE thing in the world to see last night? Commercials for upcoming 10 and 11:00 newsstories about the rant, followed by commecials for "Buy Season 7 of Seinfeld, now on DVD!" You think they could have held off on the DVD commercials for a bit. And I agree, his apology wasn't an apology - it was a rambling aim at defense, which didn't make sense at all, and "I'm sorry" never seemed to enter into it.

It would be funny if it weren't so horrible. He seems one step away from saying he needs an exorcism. His only admission of guilt was the total perplexity of "The rage inside me, where does the rage come from!?".

It was disgusting and AWFUL. I hope his career is ruined. It's time people stopped making allowances for such trash (same goes for Mel). There should be zero tolerance for such conduct.

I wish there were a video of Gibson's tirade. The true nature of Richards' outburst isn't evident until you view the tape; I think he'd have gotten off a lot easier had it not been recorded. Gibson should have experienced the same disgust.

Disgusting, vile and repulsive are the kindest words I've got for Michael Richards. As if Mel Gibson's behavior wasn't heinous enough, MR's was even worse. Given all the years MR's worked in stand up, he should've known that hecklers are an occupational hazard and if he couldn't handle it, then he shouldn't be in the business in the first place. As for his "apology," it was as lame as his post-Seinfeld career, if not lamer.

Even though Kramer is much more well-known, I think Stanley Spadowski from UHF is the more tainted character because of this.

I feel kind of bad for Jerry, too -- what else could he say? I'll bet he's ready to throttle MR.
I can't bring myself to watch the video. The descriptions are bad enough. As for saying he's not a racist, who the hell does he think he's kidding? Honestly, I've got a temper, but no matter how pissed off I've gotten in my life, never once have I been tempted to unleash the n-word on anyone. The fact that that's the first word he spat out shows who MR really is and how he really thinks. Decent people don't use that word. In my house, you'd have gotten your mouth washed out with soap for uttering it. It's just not done. Except by racist assholes. Hence, MR is a racist asshole. Way to taint my memories of one of my all-time favorite shows, jackass.
