My girl. I had been on the fence for years about whether or not I liked her, but see her early 30s work, especially Babyface. She was awesome and I think really underrated.

I've only seen her in The Lady Eve, but she was just fantastic in that. I suddenly want to see it again. Also, I want that gigantic white feather fan she had when she first came in as Lady Eve.

So sexy, especially in Ball of Fire. She radiates heat in that one.

Barbara, like Humphrey Bogart, made no bad movies IMO. Christmas in Connecticut is a pretty funny movie that either has been or will be shown soon on TCM. I'd like to see her first TV show (not Big Valley) but I'm not holding my breath for a DVD release.

Aside from her TV performances as the matriarch on The Big Valley, she made lots and lots of wonderful movies. Some of my favroites:
Double Indemnity co-starring Fred McMurray; The Strange Love of Martha Ivers with Van Heflin and Kirk Douglas; Sorry, Wrong Number with Burt Lancaster; Ball of Fire with Gary Cooper; Stella Dallas with John Boles; Meet John Doe with Gary Cooper; Golden Boy and Executive Suite with Bill Holden; and The Violent Men with Edward G. Robinson and Glenn Ford.
Week before last, I saw one of her very first movies on TCM -- Night Nurse co-starring Joan Blondell. Right now, I'm watching Remember the Night with Fred McMurray on TCM.
I never miss The Big Valley, which comes on twice a day on Direct TV. I love this woman although I hated The Thorn Birds, but then I've never liked Richard Chamberlain, even as Dr. Kildare.

One thing that puzzles me-was she ever considered A list in Hollywood-I heard she was always looked at as B list

I remember finally seeing Double Indemnity in my late 30s and finally realizing what that Carol Burnett skit was all about. Great movie.

She was a four-time Oscar nominee, liked by everyone who worked with her. She was Frank Capra's favorite actress and he was in love with her. She said the one regret of her career was never making a Western with John Wayne. Everyone called her Missy. She's my favorite actress.

How do we know Capra was in love with her?

I think she definitely was A-List, by our current standards, it's just the studio system was so different and weird. She wasn't marketed as a sex symbol, even though she was hella sexy. She wasn't a grand dame bitca like Crawford or Davis. I don't really know what her "persona" was, in Old School Hollywood. So I guess she was pretty private.
The notion of a "character actress who's also a star" didn't really exist back then.
I've only seen her in a couple films, but Lady Eve is one of my favorite films ever. IMO, it's better than Philadelphia Story or It Happened One Night, but it doesn't nearly get the press or make the listings of great movies. VIVA LA EVE!
Damn you, Greecies! I'm trying to pack up my apartment and now you make me want to take a break and watch Double Indemnity and read The Girls to find out whether or not she was a lesbian. Shame on you, CPMCoG for distracting me with your sexy pink and white self.
