Crappy as that movie was, at least he looked pretty. And he didn't have to use an American accent! I loved him in Solomon and Gaenor, so conflicted, so sad... And he was adorably campy in Very Annie Mary, working the cameo with his best friend, Matthew Rhys.

So, it looks like Ioan's pulled a Michelle Williams. His fianceé is upset at some of the things that's been said about her at his semi-official site Ioan Online, and has demanded the removal of the poster that's offended her. This has led Ioan to write the following letter: (I got this off a messaging list, because I can't find the original post. Will remove if it's inappropriate) Dear all,
It is with a heavy heart that I write this letter. I was utterly aghast and in a state of shock when I discovered the unpleasant and sometimes vitriolic comments that were being leveled at my fiancée Alice when I recently observed the community forum on `ioanonline'. I find it hard to believe that people who have supported me so ardently over the years would behave in such a despicable manner.
I have never been happier since meeting and falling in love with Alice and I am overwhelmed with excitement about getting married to the woman of my dreams.
I am aware that it is always a small minority that gives the majority a bad name.
I wish to thank those of you who continually support everything I do in such a positive and passionate manner, and I implore the few of you that sullies the good name of the majority to put an end to this practice that has brought such heartache to me personally.
Regards
Ioan
I feel for Ioan's fianceé, but I really don't think that either she or Ioan's team should go around policing semi-official sites. Especially if the fans are just questioning her fashion choices. Hell, the Fug girls do it all the time. I think it's doing more harm then good. People at his IMDB page and the website all seem slightly irked. However, that's just my opinion. YMMV. ETA: I found the original post, if anyone wants to see it. Ioan Online

Heh, the bad comments directed at her and especially her very questionable fashion taste started quite early on. IIRC it started when she showed up on the US premiere of 102 Dalmatians in a black lacey see-though top sans bra. And her fashion choices ever since have been rather scrutinized...well, they've run the gamut and most are awful.
And I agree with you monkeypants, it's not even his semi-official site. It still is a site run by fans, who happen to have some contact. Do they still call her Malice by the way?
All I remember is that some willingly chose not to discuss his girlfriend at the time, since she didn't put herself in the public eye and this stance was well respected by most. But Alice? She puts herself out there, poses willingly in front of the cameras, but wishes his fans not to say anything mean or what not when pictures appear? What the...?

I'm not comfortable with actors' PR teams policing non-official websites. That being said, sometimes fans get carried away with negative comments. I've always found that ignoring those obnoxious fans makes the time I spend at those actor websites much more enjoyable. As far as Alice is concerned, I think she's pretty. I actually like her quirky sense of style. I'm not saying I love all of her outfits, but I give her props for wearing some of what she does. There are times I wear quirky accessories, etc. to spice up my outfits. Ioan and Alice seem very much in love. They dated a long time before finally getting engaged. I'm happy for them. They make an attractive couple. Of course, this is just my personal opinion. I know some of his fans would disagree. ETA: Is it wrong of me to love how he worded his letter?

It's a nicely-worded letter, but probably not the best move. A note to the webmaster mentioning that he'd seen that people were getting really nasty about Alice and that he'd regrettably have to stop dropping in might've brought the masses back in line without his overt presence.
I used to love this guy, at the very beginning when he was still all Welsh and even his interviews sounded Valley (especially the stuff about never moving to Hollywood). But since then... ech. I've not been impressed with his work ("Man and Boy" being the straw that snapped the camel's back -- awful! And HE was awful!). As for Alice, I saw her in that movie about the bigamist flight attendant, and not a thing since.
So ironic that Jamie Bamber turns out to to be the one I pay attention to now.

How depressing, cause I've just been exposing my friend to Hornblower. She loves them and I'm re-falling in love with them. It's too bad I don't really like most of the new stuff he does.

I'm not comfortable with actors' PR teams policing non-official websites. I have belonged to a Yahoo Group about IG for years, but I haven't been back in ages--a bit disillusioned after the FF movie. So I high-tailed it back to get their take. Apparently, it wasn't Ioan's PR people who raised a fuss. It was Alice Evans herself. She sent the webmistress an email demanding the removal of one of the long-standing and very well-liked moderators who made a remark about her that she didn't care for. So the webmistress, who I think wants to be recognized as the Official Ioan Gruffudd fan site one day, immediately cuts the mod in question loose. And chaos ensued. Long time LOTF (Ladies of the Forum) and another mod have left in protest. April (the webmistress) has posted a slew of new rules about what is suitable to post and what isn't. Normally, his mother is in charge of all of his correspondence. People are speculating that Alice actually wrote this note and had him sign it. Something about grammatical errors that Gillian--his mother--would never miss since she is a teacher. But I don't know about that. Could be a bit far-fetched. There have been various reports about Alice being incredibly rude on sets where Ioan is working. I think she may have actually been barred from one. And if you haven't seen his story about the way they became engaged--he told it on Craig Fergeson's late night talk show, I believe--you must. She comes off as a total shrew.

Alice was also in a relationship with Picasso's immensely rich grandson when she met Ioan, as far as I remember. She's had a very unusual life -- I think she went to France in her late teens, started getting acting work, almost instantly hooked up with Picasso and was swept into a very privileged lifestyle (and she was no impoverished child prior to this). The level of attention this 8-year liason got in France was something akin to what JFK Jr got here. I recall reading some interviews at the time; when they split up and she got together with Ioan, she made lots of references to not being a grown-up in that relationship. Considering the immediate segue to Gruffudd, I'm thinking that she's never quite had to learn how to be a self-reliant, intelligent adult, and both the words "fairy tale" and "spoilt" spring to mind. And I have to say, before he really started dating Alice his interviews were generally humble and centred. No idea if the current incarnation of Ioan is her influence or just the result of someone getting too hoodwinked by the entertainment industry, but it's not particularly pretty. To top it all off, he's not actually that good! He's very nice to look at, and does well in period pieces where melodrama's appropriate and the rest of the cast is good, but he's not shown range and has now morphed into something very Hollywood. What's the engagement story? Ah, have just seen the IO post. Alice Evans, you idiot. Same thing goes for Ioan's PR team, who have apparently never encountered the way the web works. Either set up your own damn site, or give the current site your blessing and give the mods sweeping banning powers, but that post makes it pretty clear that Alice has a thin skin and kicked up a fuss about controlling discussion. Either they've gotten truly horrible advice, or decided to ignore the good advice they got.

This is all fascinating.
I've been reading at IMDB and it seems Alice posts there too. Its interesting to note that she's just recently gone through and deleted all her posts. Luckily, some posting after her, quoted her, so you can see what she's said. She's got the maturity level of a 13 year old, and that's being generous.
I feel sorry for IoanOnline, they really are in a tricky spot.

this is an awesome story to follow. I don't particularly care for ioan -- but his fiancee is a HOOT.
