Well, we were asking earlier in this thread if people "got" what Stephen does on his show, and apparently they don't.I noticed that the crowd seemed to be laughing, but Bush was completely stonefaced the entire time Colbert spoke - and really, what were they expecting? I think this proves that many of them out there simply don't get what he does. ETA: A nice interview with Colbert.

He reminds me of Rick Mercer who has been tormenting politicians in Canada up-close-and-personal since about 1992. And for that I love him. ... Rick Mercer is the cat's pajamas. I don't think he's as in his element doing "The Mercer Report" as he was in "This Hour Has 22 Minutes" or "Made in Canada," though, because in those ensemble shows he could let his snarkiness loose, whereas within the format of his own show he has to try to be more warm and likable. Colbert wasn't really an appropriate choice for the dinner as he's really too edgy for such a square event. They should've hired Greta van Sustern or something.

I think those in charge of booking speakers for the event were trying to be hip when they asked Colbert. He's on Comedy Central, and has a demographic of mostly college students and young adults--trying to draw that audience to what is, esentially, a very stodgy event. What they didn't realize, of course, is that his conservative stances are all an ironic act and he made them look like morons.
What nobody realized, I think, was what balls he has. And that he accepted the offer so he could "stick it to the man."
I just love him. I know, I'm a dork for saying that.

Dude. I think I had an orgasm watching his White House Correspondents Dinner speech. What an awesome and truly gutsy speech to make. I knew he had balls, but I didn't know they were made of steel!
Late to the party, as usual, but I am totally in lust with him. Woo hoo!!!

My take on this was that they *did* get it - hence the no laughing. Colbert wasn't just ripping George a new one, he was implicity ripping the press a new one - the mere fact that it takes a professional comedian to actually hold the presidential feet to the fire - because the press have abjectly failed to do so - is an implicit rebuke to that (cringing, sniveling) press corps.
He didn't get many laughs and yeah, loads of those jokes technically "fell flat" but I don't think for a second that Colbert was really there to make people laugh. He's a smart guy, he saw an opportunity to say a lot of things no one would normally be allowed to say to the president (i.e. - the context of the annual 'roast', the fact something officially labeled 'comedy' can get away with far more than something labeled, for example, 'sit-down interview') and he said them. The silence in that room was due to the majority of its inhabitants bathing luxuriously in their own failure and shame and Boo Fucking Yah! to Colbert for saying what he did.

Holy shit. Poor guy! I had no idea he had such a tragic personal past. Would it be inappropriate of me to say, now, that I think he's Teh Sex? Cuz I do. Nope, he's the sex, all right. That twinkle in his eye puts him squarely on my list.
