Does anyone think that she could cause an upset at the Oscars? I know it seems like a given that Julie Christie will win best actress, but could Marion get it? Everybody raves about her performance, especially people like Cate Blanchett. When your fellow actors heap so much praise on you, I think that really says something. I definitely think so. Right now I would say that Supporting Actress is wide, imo, but that Best Actress doesn't feel like a lock in the way that the men's categories both do right now. I think that Cotillard has several things going for her that neither George Clooney or Hal Holbrook do. She's never won before like Clooney already has recently, and Julie Christie isn't in a film nominated for Best Picture which is likely to win. Plus, Away from Her and La Vie En Rose are nominated for more than one award which means that Academy members maybe more willing to watch those movies over something that only has one nomination for it like with Blanchett's performance in I'm Not There (which I read that the Weinstein Company is trying to get around by giving a free DVD inside Variety which only has Blanchett's parts not the whole movie on it). I don't think it means much for the Best Actress race only the Best Picture race, but I would say that La Vie En Rose did do better at the box office than Away from Her; although, I think if you combined all the Best Actress movies' box office together besides Juno, they still wouldn't be as what Juno has made already. However, the movie does have subtitles, and I think that really works against Cotillard especially since she has such a small company promoting her. Plus, Christie has the legendary veteran status, which may or may not help her. It didn't help Sissy Spacek or Ellen Burstyn, but they were facing much stronger contenders while Christie is in an easier field because her closest competitor is in a small film that is subtitled, and whose not that well-known. Both films are the kind of roles that actors love do award other actors for, and Cotillard probably has the edge since she looks so different than how she looks as Edith Piaf in her later years that it's hard to believe that it's the same actress. I think if an upset or a mini-upset were to happen, it would definitely be in this category, but if an Oscar pool, I'm still going with Christie because she won the Golden Globe and SAG, and while the talk about how she wasn't really campaigning was suppose to hurt her while help Cotillard. I think Christie's done a pretty good job of being where she needed to be this awards season.

I also think that if there's an upset then it happens in the Best Actress category. Having said that, there have been no real surprises in the main categories (minus the Crash debacle of course) in the past few years since the date change of the Oscars. If they were still in March Marion might have a chance as her buzz has been quite great in the past few days. It also would have helped if there had been a Golden Globes show because she won but didn't have the chance to charm off everybody's pants with a cute acceptance speech. Oh and....somehow Helen Mirren was so much more fun last year despite winning absolutely everything and being the frontrunner for the entire awards season like Julie Christie is now. I don't think that Academy voters care about that kind of stuff though.

I hope Marion wins the Oscar. Her performance in La Vie En Rose was brilliant. But I think Christie is a lock to win the award. I think Marion is hurt by starring in a foreign language film, and being mostly unknown in the US prior to La Vie En Rose.
I loved Marion in A Very Long Engagement, and a few of her other French films. Dare To Love Me was a very quirky, unconventional romantic comedy. And it showed me she has the range to play non-dramatic roles. I hope to see more of her films in the future. La Vie En Rose made me a fan.

Does anyone know who designed the shoes she wore to the Academy Awards Luncheon? Google has told me both Chanel and Gucci and, since I'm slightly obsessed with them, I need a definitive answer.

I thought La Vie En Rose wasn't a great movie per se and boring at times, but her performance was great, if not a little over the top and I agree that the physical trasnformation, especially the voice, was her winning ticket. I'm not a fan of biographies in general and it seems like Hollywood is running out of ideas because every year it's a given we will see some nominations of actors portraying real life characters, so I'm biased when it comes to biographies (last one I liked was Walk the Line), but she definetely is talented.
As far as French actresses go, I think she's prettier than Eva Green and Audrey Tatou.

She won Best Actress at the BAFTA'S. Wow! That's really shocking to me. I figured that Julie Christie had that award won for sure. I guess if she could take the BAFTA, her chances may not seem so bad for the Oscar after all.

Congrats to her but dress[/color] was rather unfortunate. It would've looked better without those white sheets on the side.

Backstage press interview after her BAFTA win. Her genuine shock and gratefulness almost makes up for the odd cape/train hybrid attached to her dress. Almost.
