If Nick was so concerned about his children, then why did he leave their home? He left his defenseless kids with their unstable mother and moved in with his grandparents. He has the resources to set up a home for his children. He isn't even doing that for them.
Mariah has been crazy for years. It didn't just pop up in the last few years. She's been this way since her breakdown and Nick married that. Nick was just as much a sycophant as the people Mariah employs. He's no better to me than Mariah.

I'm angry at Nick too, perhaps because their situation reminds me so much of a friend's separation from his wife over parenting. Like everyone else is saying, the writing was on the wall. What did Nick think would happen when Mariah had kids -- that her emotional/mental issues would disappear? As an adult, you learn from personal experience/research that when a woman like that has kids, the issues often get worse and affect the kids. I think Nick is actually more at fault than Mariah in this situation.

What are the rumours about her and alcohol? Is it that she has a problem with alcohol/is an alcoholic? I would not be surprised. I am sure we all remember about 3 years ago how drunk she was at the Golden Globes when Lee Daniels had to take her up the stairs to accept an award and coax her off the stage when she was rambling. There were also rumours about alcohol when she had her breakdown in 2001 after the failure of Glitter. I am not sure if she is mentally unstable (although one breakdown and a rather long stay in a mental health facility at that time may suggest that she is prone to some serious issues), but she is deeply deeply deeply insecure, which we all know. I think part of that is because she has not been coping well with ageing in the business and her decreasing popularity over the years. It is interesting that things have been going badly since she left Tommy Motolla, except for her Emancipation of Mimi album in 2005. It's been rumored that Mariah likes alcohol a little too much (although I would stop short of calling her an alcoholic). Eminem even called her out on that in his diss song "The Warning". On another message board someone posted a YouTube video from this summer's Summer Jam. One of the organizers said Mariah had arrived late for rehearsal, and while she was moseying into the venue, she couldn't even let go of the flute of champagne in her hand. She didn't seem drunk, but she couldn't even be bothered to put the glass down while she was walking? She couldn't even had handed it off to one of her handlers/assistants to hold for a minute? Nick didn't know any of this before they had kids? (Even though Mariah and Nick only dated for like a minute before they got married, they were married for at least a couple of years before "dem babies" came along.) Mariah may be feeling insecure about aging, I doubt that would have been why she was hitting the sauce around the time of her first breakdown. That was also the period during which Em and Mariah allegedly had a thing.

What was the nature of her Glitter-era breakdown? I don't remember reading about it.

What was the nature of her Glitter-era breakdown? I don't remember reading about it. In a word? Glitter was the reason for her Glitter-era breakdown! The movie didn't just bomb, it became the post-9/11 go-to joke. The soundtrack was her first album for Virgin and it was also a failure, even though I personally love it. Virgin publicly dumped her by buying out her contract, which had to be humiliating. This was also the height of teen pop. Christina was nipping at her heels, and Britney had everybody's attention. It also didn't help that trifling heifers were surreptitiously acquiring her samples through Mariah's ex-husband. 2001 was not a good year for her.

Was that about the time she kept taking off her clothes in public and/or would show up woefully underdressed? Didn't she do a Cribs episode where she kept changing clothes in order to wear a different outfit in each room? (I'm not hallucinating this, am I?)

No you're not. She even wore heels while doing the eliptical. It was pretty ridiculous.

My (sadly extensive) experience with alcoholics is that they aren't fall down drunk, but rather drinking either constantly or at inappropriate times. (Work, dress rehearsals, funerals, etc)

Mariah had an erratic appearance on TRL in July 2001, followed by a hospitalization for "extreme exhaustion" in the following days: The statement was removed and her publicist said "she was obviously very tired and not thinking clearly", though her team later admitted a "physical and emotional breakdown". Publicly, anyway, the label and studio said they wanted her available to promote the Glitter project, so the release dates were pushed back. The movie was originally scheduled for release on August 31, 2001, with the soundtrack dropping 10 days, before on August 21. So when the movie's release date was pushed back three weeks to September 21, the soundtrack's release was also moved similarly, to...9/11. The whole project was probably always going to tank, though.

It also didn't help that trifling heifers were surreptitiously acquiring her samples through Mariah's ex-husband. 2001 was not a good year for her. J. Lo was reportedly one of the "trifling heifers". Mariah had to have taken the Glitter debacle personally. She had a lot to prove-that she was her own woman and she didn't need Tommy to have a hit record. (There were rumors that Tommy did some things to sabotage her, but I dunno how plausible those are.) FotoStoreSheila, I didn't think Glitter or the soundtrack were that bad. I liked her take on "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life" and "I Didn't Mean to Turn You On". Last night I had a crazy thought. Maybe in another universe a Mariah-MJ pairing would have made sense...if MJ truly had liked women instead of (underaged) boys. Neverland Ranch! Hello Kitty rooms! A splashy wedding vow renewal at Disneyland! In terms of emotional maturity, they seemed to be on the same level. Also, they happened to have something against Tommy Mottola. ETA: How prescient in the TRL footage that Mariah said to Carson Daly, "Every now and then, someone needs some therapy."
