My opinion of him has definitely been changed by the documentary, particularly in regards to Sylvia "Spanky" Taylor. He knew perfectly well what was happening to her and her children and yet he said and did nothing to help this woman he was so close to. Screw him.

I haven't seen the doc yet, but I read the book. And to my memory, John was kept in the dark about Sylvia's situation. She was in Clam Lock Down and he thought she had just abandoned him as his sponsor. She couldn't tell him the truth of what was being done to her or else she'd face more punishment. I don't know if the documentary went into any more details of what he did or didn't know.
But from the book, I gathered he was kept in the dark and also rather dumb not to make the connection of why his sponsor just suddenly disappeared or 'abandoned' him.
Cruise is so buddy buddy with Misgavige that I find it hard he doesn't have a pretty strong sense of what happens to non-celeb Clams who either break the rules... or fall prey to shenanigans from the higher ups. But Travolta always came across to me as completely clueless- and not in a cute, endearing Alicia Silverstone way.
I want to see the Documentary so bad, but I don't think I'm going to have a chance any time soon. So I don't mind reading 'spoilers'. If there's more details about Travolta's knowledge of Spanky's torment at the hands of the Clams, please dish the dirt!!

The worst they could do is label him an SP and turn his children against him, essentially cutting off contact regardless of any legal custody agreements. Kelly Preston would have to be on board with leaving the cult with him, and I can't imagine that happening anytime soon. That's why I think he's trapped. Whether he is aware of this fact and is just doing what he has to do or whether actually believes what he is saying is anyone's guess.

Agreed, any sympathy I had for Travolta is fucking gone. He does know what's going on, Spanky told him what was happening to her and he still chose to save his own ass. That smug face he makes after stupidly declaring, "What other religion is based on joy?" made me want to punch my TV so hard.
He didn't need Scientology to get his role on Welcome Back, Kotter- he is obviously a living, breathing Vinnie Barbarino come to real life.

If Katie Holmes could manage to escape the Clam's clutches with her child, I think an A/B list celebrity like John Travolta would be able to hire the right kind of lawyers and such to do the same, particularly with the perception of Scientology at an all-time low since the release of the book and documentary.

The difference between Katie Holmes and JT is that Katie had a support network of friends and family who weren't Scientologists because she was just a recent clam-in-law. JT has been a Scientologist for decades, since the beginning of his career, and that would make it much harder for him to find someone to reach out to that he could trust and who would be willing to take the personal risks associated with going through the "fair game" process.

It is true that JT probably doesn't have any one close to him who is not a member of the "church", but he could reach out to former Scientologists like Haggis or Beghe or Remini, who probably have already been through the "fair game" process and very likely would be willing to help him defect. With a good group of lawyers, he can preemptively work out a deal that would minimize Kelly's ability to influence the children against him. The release of the book and documentary brought to light a great deal information about Scientology's practice of disconnection which would be difficult for her to refute. Unfortunately, his daughter is of an age where she might not be willing to leave the church, but his youngest is only four and could be raised away from the church.
Bottom line, JT has plenty of money and plenty of options if he would choose to pursue them, but he chooses not to.

Girly - in the documentary Spanky talks about how Travolta told her he was disappointed in her. I think something about how she debased herself? This was when she was toiling away performing slave labour for the sea org. The implication that I took away was that he knew she was being "punished" for alleged transgressions and he was disappointed in her. So yeah he definitely knew how she was being treated.
