Spacey's been pretty lucky that the press has let him go back to being "private". The last time Spacey's sexuality was an issue in the press - during his American Beauty Oscar campaign when he firmly denied being gay and introduced everyone to his long-suffering beard - his career took a pretty big hit for a few years.

Although, every couple years or so, much like Travolta, pics will be released online and in tabloids. With Travolta it's images of him kissing his pilot or a grainey pic of him in a bathhouse or whatever. With Spacey it's usually party picks where he's fondling the bare ass of a youngish guy and everyone looks wasted or high...

I don't get why Spacey's still in the closet either. Travolta, with the wife and kids and church, I understand what's at stake for him. But it seems like everyone already know about KS and he could just casually acknowledge it in an interview. Richard Chamberlain came out a few years ago (to the surprise of almost no one). Even though he was in his 70s and in a very long-term relationship, so his coming out was the least scandalous it could ever be, he said his phone stopped ringing for a year. Ridiculous though it is, acknowledging being gay has an adverse affect on an actor's career. On topic, I think John stays in Scientology because of his kids. I don't think he'll ever announce that he's leaving, no matter what he thinks about it personally.

Saturday Night Disco Fever and Grease were huge, and he and his heartthrob status was part of that. They were record breakers at the time, and he was the lead in both. He was a HUGE deal in the late '70s. The entire club scene tried to emulate his SNDF look for years. Personally, I think both movies are gross and horribly misogynistic. But they were massive movies and it's undeniable that he was a part of that. It probably wouldn't surprise anyone that I love Saturday Night Fever and John Travolta's character was a large part of that. Yes, the mindset exhibited by many of the characters in the movie was horribly misogynistic and racist and homophobic. However, I got the feeling that John Travolta's character was redeemable because he started to realize that his surroundings were full of BS and he wanted to escape that. Also, how many (straight*) men do you know can dance like that (or would want do dance at all)? At this point of his career, John Travolta seems to be past his heartthrob phase, although I don't think he cares. He must feel secure about himself in order to be willing to do an entire movie in drag. *I know Travolta is suspected not to be 100% straight, but the Tony Manero character was established to be hypermasculine and very straight.

He got off to a rocky start, but I think he's really great on American Crime Story as Robert Shapiro. He's perfect as a sleazy lawyer.
