I practically watched that kid grow up on Degrassi. He'll always be Jimmy Brooks to me. Every time I see him on MTV I find myself staring in disbelief.
I don't think Justin Bieber accidentally picked up his accent and manner and speaking. He's been trained to appeal to the tween audience the same as all the rest of the teen stars. The difference is that he got his training in Atlanta from Usher instead of in Hollywood from Disney.

Apparently Usher said that Usher's people taught Bieber to dance, but everything else (the singing) he had on his own. So, the dancing, which is definitely very "urban" in stylings is very much influenced by hip hop/r& b.

He sounds like he's faking an accent to me. I believe he's affecting it.
I moved around a lot as a kid and my accent settled into the homogenized standard generic North American I-can't-tell-where-you're-from accent. The accent I have is the kind that I think kids who move from place to another would more likely have.

I lived in the UK when I was 12-13 and had no idea that I sounded remotely British, until I came back to Canada and was told so. I still retain a lilt to my speech decades later.

I think it's possible he picked up a bit of the Atlanta accent (that's more than possible) but then he or his managers decided to exaggerate it. I guess I don't picture even white boys in Atlanta sounding like him. Maybe they do. But when even Justin Timberlake (who grew up in different parts of the South) isn't sounding like this, I have a hard time believing Justin Bieber naturally would.
If anything, I think the accent would modify and change depending on his environment (sort of like what happens with Christian Bale). When I'm in a certain place, I'll sound one, picking up the accent of the people around me. When I'm somewhere else, I'll pick up the sound of the people in that place. But that he consistently sounds like whichever way Usher wants him to sound but never manages to sound Canadian AT ALL (I imagine he must visit Canada during his off-time) is a bit perplexing to me.
I mean, even Usher doesn't sound the way Justin Bieber does.

It sounds like a "hip" way of saying shorty.

You know, I can't give him a hard time for the way he talks. He's 16, he's trying to look and sound cool. Hopefully in a few years he looks back and cringes at what a poseur he was. Perhaps he feels like he fits in more by talking like that. He looks idiotic instead, but most teenagers do.
ETA----I very rarely post here, and I can't believe I used one of my rare posts to discuss Justin Bieber. Help me.

If he hasn't grown out of it by his mid-20s then I'll feel free to think he's an a-hole.

I agree that he's young and that's why he's posing. I actually don't think he's a jerk for faking his accent. But I DO think he is faking one and that it's an affectation and not something he necessarily came by naturally.
He actually seems like a sweet enough kid and fairly nice. Nonetheless I do think adult women (i.e Chelsea Handler) look severely creeped out when he tries to hit on them, as they should be, I think. His much younger looking face actually does creep me out somewhat as well. Normally I think youthful looking people are cute enough (cute as in little kid cute), but he looks sort of odd to me (maybe because his face doesn't go with his music -- as if I really believe this kid could convincingly "oh baby" anyone).
I myself even felt rather uncomfortable watching him during that Lonely Teacher skit. When the camera would pan on his face trying to do that smirky thing with his eyes and lips for Tina Fey, I could feel myself cringing and almost silently screaming in horror (not because his acting was bad or anything -- that was fine -- but because it was extremely uncomfortable watching this little 5 year old try to act sexy).

I think he's faking the accent as well. Like y'all said, if he hasn't grown out of it by 20 (if he's still around) then it'll get really annoying.
I agree with the older women thing. He really needs to stop trying to flirt so hard. He tried to do it to Beyonce once and she looked so uncomfortable. It's creepy and not cute, like he and his people seem to think. No grown woman outside of the Mary Kay Letourneau set wants to be flirted to by a toddler.
