I also just finished watching Season 3. I know I am part of a small minority but god I hope Moriarity is not back for Season 4. I did not like how the actor chose to play him and just found him annoying. Fingernails on a chalkboard annoying. So I'm hoping the showrunners weren't lying when they stated (after Season 2) that Moriarity was dead, dead, dead. No take-backs.

Who knows what they're going to do. With all the fan service they did this season I wouldn't be surprised if they brought him back since the actor is so popular within the fandom. I like him but I'm not as crazy about him as many others.

I know that Andrew Scott is considered to be a very good actor but his portrayal of Moriarty sometimes verged on unintentionally humorous. I sincerely hope he is gone for good as that last minute twist really didn't do it for me. Again, I think if the series were longer, 6 eps as opposed to 3, people would get their fill of supporting characters. But as it stands, the fans clamor for more from the mere morsels they get every two years and the showrunners appease them, at the expense of the plot.

I hope Moriarty stays out of the picture, too. The character is cartoonish. I found the scene where he reveals his identity to Sherlock and John at the pool in the Season 1 finale tiresome. The alternating yelling and speaking at a low volume was annoying. Overall, I'm disappointed in Season 3. Too much focus on the meta and inside jokes (although I liked Anderson's scenes in the first episode of the season), not enough focus on the cases.

I found Moriarty annoying too. He is so wacky and zany, not words to describe a worthy opponent.

I didn't like Moriarty at first, but after a while I was able to tap into Andrew Scott's wavelength and I started to enjoy what he was doing with the performance.
That said, Moriarty better really and truly be dead and this is just someone else using his image to get everyone's attention. I mean, if it is really Moriarty, then that is just way too many damn people on this show who have faked their deaths (Sherlock and Irene already did it. And I assume that Mary faked the death of her real identity in order to disappear into her new identity). And more importantly, it would completely undercut the impact of what Moriarty did at the end of season two. I mean, I was impressed that this dude was so batshit crazy, and so determined to beat Sherlock at any cost that he blew his own brains out in order to win their little game. This is not unlike Sherlock almost taking the cabbie's pill in the first episode just to see if he could beat the cabbie at his game, saved only by John shooting the cabbie. To me it showed just how close to the line Sherlock walked and Moriarty was an example of what would happen if Sherlock crossed that line and tapped into the darker aspects of his personality. To have Moriarty alive completely undoes all that.
It is true that the crimes/mysteries this season weren't the best, but it was great from a character development standpoint. And it was very much a love story between Sherlock and John.

I liked the portrayal of Moriarty (The silent "sorry" for being rude on the cell phone when Sherlock was pointing a gun at him cracks me up) but at the sametime, I'm ok that the character is dead and gone.

There are a lot of scenes that made me laugh but the one that keeps popping up in my head (and really, one of the only ones I remember) is "You're brown as a nut." (Sherlock to Lestrade) Also I loved that he hugged Sherlock while John reacted so angrily upon his return.
Seriously though, why is Rupert Graves so hot? Where has he been all my life?

I love Andrew Scott so this is tough for me. On one hand, I love seeing his interpretation of Moriarty; over the top, weird, appropriately Irish. OTOH, there's gotta be real death here or else no one's death has any weight. I don't know canon but I assume at some point people die for real in the books.
