We are committed to the peaceful transfer of power to this new Politics thread.
Here's where we will slam the door on the madness of Cheeto as we usher in a new era of civility, responsibility and competence. It's about fucking time.

There's video of her getting shot. She pretty clearly looked to be with the terrorists and was trying to jump over a barrier into the area where congress members were. She died for following Trump. He is not worth it. She was literally wearing a Trump flag as a cape and looks to be very, very young. I would not be surprised to learn that she was one of the "just for funsies" crowd who just wanted to be part of the thing and wasn't a hardcore believer in the conspiracy. Very sad and so completely unnecessary. Better security should have been in place since everyone knew the Maga crowd was planning SOMETHING, but Trump wanted this spectacle. It's 8 pm, they are supposed to resume certifying the election now. I kinda feel like it shouldn't have been announced until it was all done, there are still an awful lot of people in the streets in DC.

He only has himself to blame.
After today the world is not just judging him but also anyone who is still insane enough to support him.

We told them this would happen four years ago but I think people thought Dems were being sore losers. Here we are. Edit: Deleted her fake age. Sorry for the fake news.

We're hearing more about how the Capitol police didn't really do a lot to stop the protestors (politely getting out of their way, taking selfies, etc.) I actually think it's a little encouraging to hear this.
It's obviously not ideal that security didn't do its job, but that seems to me to be less frightening, less unprecedented, and more fixable of a problem than "trump supporters are so fired up that they forced their way into the Capitol against security that was on the top of its game". The story seems to be morphing from that to "trump supporters, faced with minimal opposition, did something very predictable and not that hard".

She wasn't 24. She has been identified as Ashley Babbitt. She was in the Air Force for 14 years (as a "high-level security officer") and was married. Former military thinking she could pull that shit? Unbelievable.

A ramble from over here... America was the place we looked to, the place we leave our lives, loved ones and homes for, for good, hope and prosperity. America was where we believed the movies, the television but the reality was on a visa we could go there and earn enough on tips to support another year at home in college. America was where we went and sent money home. America was where we celebrated our ancestors and welcomed Presidents home.
America tonight I’m looking at Georgia with hope, look at what you turned around.. I’m at the same time lost for words that the country I one time saw was my only future, is where it is and I’m glad now I never left home
America we will always believe in you in spite of the fact you are not the bee all and end all we thought you once were.

When 12 year old African American boys can get killed playing in a park, I'm not going to mourn a domestic terrorist getting shot laying seige to the U.S. capitol, no matter how young she may have been.
ETA: Loeffler just withdrew her objection to Arizona vote certification.

I don’t know, I feel like the police charged with protecting that building and the people in it shrugging, all “What are you gonna do?” is a much bigger problem than a mob of thousands finding their way in. Why did they fall down on the job? Intentionally, it seems? How does that happen when a black person can’t cut a fart within 100 feet of a police officer without finding their face smashed on the ground? Remember how the Capitol looked like a militarized zone during the BLM protest this past summer? Where were all those officers? Today’s events didn’t happen spontaneously. The MAGA crowd has been openly plotting this on social media, that’s why yesterday I said today was going to be nuts. What happened was far worse than I imagined it would be, and I don’t spend much time looking at conservative social media (I just follow some people who do) but folks were making it clear they didn’t intend to be peaceful. This isn’t an attack on this take (and please don’t take it as such). It is something of a relief that these people aren’t tactical geniuses. But the second most shocking thing today was the complete security failure. It mirrored what happened a few months ago when armed “protesters” invaded the Capitol in Michigan. I saw much stronger reactions in my hometown all summer directed at people who protested outside of an empty Federal building than what was put up against the people storming the Capitol while Congress was in session. The difference seems to be that these are mostly white people, and the kind of white people who people who study this stuff say are the biggest domestic threat because of their tendency towards violence, yet everyone looks away and shrugs, because they are white. The second group to ever invade the Capitol in this country’s history did it because law enforcement shrugged and let them in. I don’t know how to solve that problem.
