A friend had to have some basal carcinomas removed from her face, and I accidentally bleated "cool scar!" (It was). She's a laid-back librarian and not a pop star, so she just laughed. Another friend was seriously burned from an airbag and she can see her scars, but I can't.
I wondered if she was messed up, too. I spent my cool down this morning trying to imagine how one would get a facial injury that bad not in a car accident, and I came up with nothing.

She has small children, doesn't she? If she was holding one, she might have tried to protect the child and took the brunt. I have had that happen before and it is scary.

That's true--maybe a pet was involved, even.

From the little I know of her, she seems to have exceptionally bad body image issues so I wouldn't be shocked if the scar is actually not that bad and she needs therapy more than anything else. It is a scary number of stitches though.

A few months ago, a girl I worked with was out on a date and trying out his VR headset. I'm sure she had had a couple of drinks, but I don't think she was drunk. Anyhoo, she got disoriented, fell over his coffee table and slammed her face into his entertainment system. Luckily, she didn't break anything but she ended up with a cut on her nose and both of her eyes were black and swollen. She looked horrible. If she had fallen on glass or hit a corner or something, I can see how you might end up with a huge gash. Ugh.

Carrie was reported to have fallen down the steps outside her home where I would imagine there are less sharp objects around that would cause a 50-stitch cut and more concrete that would cause blunt force trauma resulting in black eyes and swelling. But who the hell knows what the front of her house looks like, what's on the steps or what she was carrying. My guess would be that it was something she was carrying and fell on that caused the cut. I'm just really curious. Being the victim of a random tragic accident is a deep-seated fear. I know shit happens and you can't escape it when it does no matter how hard you try, but that fear makes me want to know every gory detail of incidents like this so I can delude myself into thinking that I can keep it from happening to me.

My mom fell down her basement stairs a couple of weeks before Christmas. She ended up with 20 stitches in her head, even though there was nothing sharp. I'm not sure how it happens but it definitely can.

I tripped and fell on a sidewalk with nothing on it a couple months ago and wound up with a gash on my shin, luckily I didn’t need stitches but it was close.

He bit the inside of his cheek hard and needed stitches. Mr. Rio, fully conscious and not inebriated, did nothing to protect his head during the recent unfortunate tripping over the laundry basket incident. She could have fallen, anywhere, really, and not been drunk.
