I thought I agreed with Rosie O'Donnell a lot politically until I started hearing daily reports of her saying wacky shit on The View.

Jesus Christ. Poor Rosie. When it rains, it pours sometimes.

I'm a little surprised about this development with the daughter. I remember when Rosie first talked about having adopted Chelsea (I was in high school and we looooved watching Rosie's show in the afternoons.)
Wonder what went wrong.

I think she's a young person with emotional problems, maybe mental health issues, having typical teenage conflict with a parent, and she has an out. She can go to another parent for support. The problem is that her bio mom, as well intentioned and loving as she may be, really doesn't know Chelsea or her history, and sees Rosie as an adversary and not a partner in parenting. She feels that she lost Chelsea and is probably thrilled the girl "chose" her over Rosie.
I don't know what kind of mom Rosie is day to day. I know she has a temper and has verbally abused people she woks with. She's also had a tumultuous romantic life in the last five years. She broke up with Kelly, who Chelsea probably also sees as a mother, then had relationships and blended families with two other women in the span of about three years. Now she's in the middle of a divorce and custody fight and dating Sophie B Hawkins. That brings a lot of chaos into her kids' lives. I'm not saying she has to be celebate, but maybe slow down on the serious relationships?

Rosie's dating Sophie B Hawkins? It's not really surprising to me that Rosie chose a woman with a new baby.

I adopted 2 sibling groups from foster care who have multiple issues. when my oldest daughter was 18, she wanted to find her birth family and I gave her all the information I had. Turned out her bio-grandmother had died the week before and she was able to get her bio-aunt's phone number from the small town funeral home. All 3 kids where stoked about the contact until they realized that 1) their bio-parents did not want anything to do with any of the 6 kids CPS had removed and placed from adoption and 2) the whole family was a chaotic bunch of mental/emotional/addicted crazies. After about a year, none of the kids wanted to have any contact with any of them.
Chelsea may well come the same conclusion. Rosie's not doing herself any favors by being adversarial and refusing to give Chelsea her birth certificate and Social Security card.

The last time I needed my birth certificate or social security card was to get my driver's license (which has since been sufficient ID for most things). If Chelsea is in the midst of substance abuse problems, it seems like a really good idea to me to not help her get a driver's license.
Chelsea may need them to try and get a job or something and Rosie has just told her that she's cut off and she can figure out how to get copies on her own...which also seems like a pretty good idea to me if you are trying to teach a rebellious 18 year old about the real world. Chelsea just needs to contact the social security office for a new card and the town hall where she was born for a copy of her birth certificate so it's not like Rosie is really preventing her from doing anything here.
