That's got to be really rough for his father. You really can't just nip addiction in the bud, as lovely as it would be if you could. He has to want to get better and no one else can want it for him. I wish them all the best though, being closely related to an addict is a hard enough path even when you don't have additional baggage.

RDJ has released a statement:
And yeah there really is no such thing as RDJ nipping it in the bud. Indio has to first recognize he has a problem and then desire to quit drugs. And even those things don't guarantee a successful recovery. RDJ struggled with addiction for years even though he knew he had a problem and wanted to quit drugs. He was finally able to recover only after he found the program that worked for him. That's the other tough part about treating addiction. There's no guaranteed way to treat it. What works for one person may not work for another.

I read on another site that he's already been to rehab for pills but that it was a new age type place. He needs to be in a real rehab program. According to Micheal K: Sometimes I feel like some Hollywood kids don't stand a chance. RDJ was pretty messed up during Indio's formative years, now he's an adult with a lot of money, a lot of hangers-on because of who his dad is, and no really motivation to do anything with his life due to having goo-gobs of scratch. Add in the genetic disposition, and you have a recipe for disaster. Hopefully, he can pull it together. Him and Shia.

Oh my gosh, RDJr's statement made me tear up. It must just gut him. Addiction is such a bastard.

I'm sorry to hear about his son but it goes to show you that addiction is genetic. I hope he gets the help he needs. RDJ knows this since he has been through it all.

I get that the kid is legally an adult and makes his own decisions but his dad sure didn't do him any favors, genetically or otherwise. I've never really been into the whole RDJ comeback odyssey and stuff like this is a big reason why. Good on the guy for getting clean but he started a brand new family to go along with his brand new career and his son probably felt left behind. Just a sad situation all around.

Good on the guy for getting clean but he started a brand new family to go along with his brand new career and his son probably felt left behind. Just a sad situation all around. Huh, how so? I'm asking honestly, I'm not attacking. I knew he had drug problems after he and his first wife had Indio, and she divorced him in-between his stints in rehab and jail. Then later he remarried, but I didn't think he ignored Indio in any way or raised him incorrectly? RDJ's own father introduced him to drugs at a young age, if I recall correctly, which clearly caused or accelerated a lot of RDJ's problems. Everything I have ever read of RDJ behind the scenes, he comes across as a very compassionate, caring person. So it would surprise me that he helped bring this on, other than in a way that can't be helped (genetic predisposition).

I realize it is not exactly unheard of for men to forget their first marriage and any children from it once they marry again, but I didn't think there was really any evidence RDJ had done that. And even if he did do that, there are plenty of kids who go through the same thing and don't end up with substance abuse issues. RDJ's DNA may have very well affected his son's addiction, but really, you're either born an addict or you're not and I very much doubt RDJ's actions could have prevented this. (Can you tell this is something I've thought about a lot? )

I heard that RDJ remained involved in Indio's life. From the article linked upthread:
