The reporter came off as an asshole. Ambush interviewing is not cool, esp. for such sensitive topics. He tried to be lighthearted at the end but he knew exactly what he was doing w/ his questioning.

Guru Murthy's an excellent reporter and investigative journalist, and I've no idea why anyone thought it was a good idea to give him a puff piece on a new movie. This was a complete mismatch of styles and expectations and whoever set it up should get a slap.

Besides, this was clearly a press junket. You don't just go out there and dance around a topic that you know is clearly not appropriate.
Did you garner an exclusive? No. Did he know going into this that you were going to stir up in the past in such an off-putting, negative way that he was caught off guard? No. That's just messed up.
Bad form all around.

Does anyone remember the magazine interview he did right around releasing the first Iron Man? I remember thinking it was so strange that he had this buddy/assistant/sponsor with him more or less at all times making him shakes, reminding him to take vitamins etc. And he was always around. Now the idea of a sober companion is much more common.

Gross.eta According to that article he posted that interviews with Diane Sawyer and Kelly&Michael were "corrective experiences" with "legitimate journalists". If Murthy agreed to the interview under the condition that certain subjects were off the table, that's one thing. but if that wasn't the case, I don't think there's anything inappropriate about a journalist not sticking to softball questions. RDJ is promoting the movie, but the journalist is trying to put together a story, not a press package. I get that some topics may be sore subjects, but it was hardly a shock jock style interview.

I don't know much about Iñarritu but I'm LOLing because cultural genocide in Spanish is "genocidio cultural." Cognates, man. That's some next level shit.

Could he pick a worse way to respond? Damn. It really was a bizarrely bad way to respond. Sometimes I feel like all of this hyperconnectivity blows things way out of proportion that would have been completely glossed over 10-20 years ago. Even pre-2000, if I had seen a tv clip in which he'd said that, it would've jumped out at me and I'd have thought he was a grade-A prick.

Could he pick a worse way to respond? Damn. I was instantly reminded of the fact he's BFF's with Crazy Mel Gibson.

Marvel should reconsider having their stars do 200 interviews per day for what seems like an entire month. The unsavory sides of these people are not staying so well hidden at this point.
