Joe Satriani went to my high school (as did another guitar hero, Steve Vai) and is supposedly very nice. Chris Martin is an epic d-bag.
I'm with Joe on this.

I like Coldplay's music (I think Martin churns out good melodies and I like the sound of the piano on some of their songs) but truthfully most of their songs sound the same to me. They're kind of interchangeable. He could have easily plagiarized himself.

One other blog mentioned that the suit was filed at this stage because that JS has been touring since mid-year until now. Chris Martin seems to be singing the riff pretty much as it was played on guitar and rhythmically, the song is pretty much the same, only sped up. I also heard the Alizee song, and going back to 1972, there is a youtube clip of melody is in the bridge of a song Cat Stevens played on piano. So could this be a victory for (Yusuf) Islam? However, if My Sweet George was charged with unconcious plagiarism, I have no problems with Coldplay going down for this. So, Team Joe!

I believe that it was unconscious, but I do remember the guy who encouraged George to write the song, Delaney Bramlett, heard the song and flipped out because he instantly heard the similarity. I never noticed until I read about the controversy.
I've read about this before; I believe British musicologists (they don't do it in the US) analyze the structure of the two songs and determine how similar they are. The more similar they are, the more the copying party has to pay to the original songwriter.
Somebody noticed that the Rolling Stones "Anybody Seen My Baby" was very similar to KD Lang's "Constant Craving" and the Stones just went ahead and put her name on there as a songwriter.

Oh, wow, just listened to what is allegedly the original and part of it does sound extremely like Viva La Vida (actually virtually identical).
Hey, I remember that French song! I liked it. No wonder I liked Viva La Vida so much.

Wow, that "mash up" makes a pretty strong case! But that French video sounds incredibly similar too. Yup - when I first heard Viva La Vida, I was instantly reminded of Twisted Tenderness by Electronic.

One of the Toronto radio stations played both songs and then overlayed the Satriani song over Viva La Vida and even to my untrained ears the songs sounded identical.

The same was done on the radio here. If what I heard is played to a jury I think Joe is going to win his case. It was the same the everything!
Edited because it takes a whole jury rather than just on juror to determine a court case.

I'd be shocked if it would go to trial. Unconscious plagiarism is a concept Chris Martin can fall back on without losing too much face than if he actually tried to fight it in court. I'm sure they will just settle out of court, giving Joe a nice fat cheque as well as his name as a writer for publishing royalties.

I agree it will more than likely be settled out of court. Still, I wonder if Coldplay could argue the riff just isn't that original. Listen to the solo at 0:35 here. Sound familiar? In fact, since Satriani filed his suit people have dug up all sorts of songs that sound similar to both songs. I hate to run this by Joe but his "original" tune just isn't that original.
