Ummm people have anger problems that they deal with eventually? Stop it ya'll! I'm trying to still like him! From the link posted of the incident, it doesn't sound as simple as Mark having an anger problem where he just "blew up," so to speak. And he only spent 45 days in prison? For violently assaulting and disfiguring/partially blinding someone? WTH? Yeah it sounds like he assaulted one Asian guy with a bar and then went out looking for the next person to assault and then gouged the second victim's eye out. It all sounded premeditated. And sadistically carried out. I have to say I really am shocked. I had never heard of this. When they do their bio fluff pieces on him on E! and the Biography channel and other such gloss-over pieces they allude to him being in a bit of trouble. But it's left for one to just assume he got in fist fights or got suspended from school and nothing more sinister than that. Did he know these people he assaulted? Or was he commiting random hate crimes on strangers?

I had heard about one of these incidents and that he'd used a racial slur. I didn't realize how violent they were. It sounds like he was totally out of control. Was he on drugs at the time? I don't want think about what kind of person would do something like this without being under the influence. It might be wrong, but if he'd been involved in petty crime as a teenager, I could overlook it as youthful indescretion, but the race part makes it seriously ooky.
I thought that he was a pretty decent character actor, but I'll never look at him the same way again.

I think he might have been high during that eye gouging incident.

He talks about his 'bad boy' past in depth on his Actors Studio appearance. He has definitely matured. Seriously, you guys should watch it! Linkage.

Linkage.I know and work with plenty of guys who have done hard time and are trying to put their lives back together. Marky Mark strikes me as a master manipulator who feels kinda bad about the stuff that he's done, but also feels kinda "Chuck Norris" about his past. Like, "Yeah, I was smoking PCP and wanted the dudes' beer so I went to hit him with a stick and accidentally poked his eye out and almost killed him. So, uh, I feel all bad and stuff." He seems a bit sociopathic to me, but I guess if he hasn't hurt anyone since he went to prison, then maybe he's ok. I just think he might be a little bit too much like his character in Fear for my comfort. All of that said, I do think he is a wonderful actor, and I will go see a movie at the theater if I know he is in it. And he's hot. I have a weakness for the hot, abusive guys: Sean Connery, Alec Baldwin, Val Kilmer... oy.

When I was in 8th grade, a friend of mine begged me to go with her afterschool to some skater-type store at the mall where Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch would be doing an autograph signing. I was soooo not into Mark---thought he was uncute and Good Vibrations was a stupid song. But she was a close friend, so I sucked it up and went. We actually ended up being some of the first people in line. MMatFB showed up about an hour late. Mark did NOT look attractive at all. He had zits, his hair was all flat and shitty-looking--he'd made no attempt to look good for his fans. And he was soooo not into doing this autograph signing, just signing the papers and not speaking to anyone. But I was pretty thrilled when the first person he spoke to was me. He said "hey cutie". Oh man, was my friend jealous. Later we went outside near the exit to watch him leave, and he kissed his fingers and put up a peace sign. The kids all went nuts. There were other kids from our school on our bus home who we found out had gone too, and we were all pretty damn excited about the whole thing. A lot of shrieking. I ended up throwing that autograph away in high school.

The racist attack/taking out a man's eye part of his life is the reason why I can never like him. It really bugs me the amount of things about a star Hollywood forgives. I just feel that it's wrong that Mark Wahlberg should be rewarded so heavily, with fame and fortune, considering the things he's done. Can you imagine being the guy he disfigured, having to see (with the one eye you have left) Mark Wahlberg on billboards and magazine covers, knowing he has the kind of riches and priviledges you can never dream of? I don't think Mark should do penance for the rest of his days or anything, but, well, life just isn't fair, is it? Also, I read an interview where Mark said he made a point of not apologising to the guy once he became famous and his reasoning (he robbed and beat up a lot of people in his teenage years, why apologise to just one person) struck me as bullshit. If you're going to apologise to someone, apologise to the person whose body part you removed.

I was coming here to post about the eye-gouging incident. It is why I can never like this creep. The perpetual "hey I got over" smirk on his face is another reason. The fact that he grew up poor in Boston does not excuse what he did to that poor Asian guy. I grew up in the Bronx and yet I somehow managed not to gouge out anyone's eye. I don't think he has matured at all, he merely puts a better face on his creepitude. [/Rant].
