JACK!!! ROSE!!!!!
Honestly I was never all that caught up in the romance angle, but it was a great "clothesline" to hang the other stuff on - the class differences, as a way to explore all levels of the ship during the sinking, the flashbacks between the past and present, all that. I still get sucked into watching that damn movie whenever it's on TV.

Totally. For a 3 hour plus movie, it is remarkably well-edited. Time just flies when you're watching it!

I was all upset back in 1998 that my favorite LA Confidential didn't win Oscars and Titanic won a bunch, including Best Picture. LA Confidential was a good movie, but in the grand scheme of things, Titanic is a much more culturally important movie.
And it's noteworthy that its financial success was not due to a humongous opening weekend followed by 3 weeks of being #1, which is what happens now. That thing stayed the #1 movie for MONTHS. It was released in December and stayed #1 until about May or June of the following year because people kept going back to see it over and over and over again.

I remember not having been to a cinema in ages, video rentals era, but Titanic got me in to cinema to see it on big screen big sound etc. The gasps at various points near the end I've never forgotten, so if its on telly I watch.

I loved, loved, loved, that movie. But to be honest, it broke my heart I haven't been able to watch it again. I was fascinated by all things Titanic when I was in HS so the authenticity of the set, the stories of the real people on the ship are what really got to me. Seeing the band continuing to play to the end broke me.
Titanic and Gorillas in the Mist (Another personal fav) are two that I've never been able to watch again.

This is a fun little story: Belfast, Northern Ireland has a stunning and enormous Titanic museum right on the site of where the ship was built. I was there last summer and it's filled with all sorts of informative and interactive exhibits. Near the end, there is an exhibit devoted to the cultural legacy of Titanic and there is a video played on a loop of the various Titanic movies. When it gets to talking about the James Cameron film, Celine's song kicks into high gear and when I was there, everyone in that room started singing the song! Some even did the Celine chest punch. So funny.

I don't recommend drinking lots of water prior when watching Titanic in one sitting. 3 hours can all of a sudden be a very long time to sit still when one feels the need to go pee, especially at the end with all that water on that big screen. Now I knew beforehand Leo would die, and by the time their dramatic scene came on, I just wanted him to drown already. It would mean the end of the movie was near! And I could finally rush to the toilets and pee!
Don't think I have ever left a cinema that quickly before. The moment Celine started to sing with the credits, I pretty much ran out to the toilets.

I never watched Titanic for many of the same reasons listed above, but really, it was also because Leonardo DiCaprio annoyed the piss out of me with his performance in Romeo + Juliet and his gigantic head creeped me out. My friends can only get me to see films of his if they promise he dies in the end. We must be related! Thankfully my sister & I first watched Titanic at home. By the end we were screaming "Die, Jack, Die!".

I've told this before, but ds1 was born in February of 1997, and by the time she was starting to try to talk, My Heart Will Go On was all over the radio. Seriously, you couldn't turn on the radio without hearing it on at least one station. As much as I liked it, it was really getting old.
So one day, I'm driving through town with ds1 in her little infant seat in the back, and the song comes on. I change the station. Next station is playing it. Change the station again. Third station is playing it. I turn the radio off in exasperation. Music does not stop. Six-or-seven-month-old ds1 is singing the song, with perfect pitch and no words--just vowel sounds (which, come to think of it, is kind of how Celine sings everything...).
She hasn't stopped singing since...

I can confirm. I was 8 months pregnant when I saw this in the theater. What was I thinking? All.that.water.onscreen. So many trips to the bathroom. I don't think I saw the movie in entirety until my son was 5 or 6. But like so many of you, doesn't matter how many times it ends up on TV, I always end up watching it.
