Think about what we've learned about celebrities over the years. Celine Dion has a remarkable clean plate compared to others we've discussed! I just feel awful about what's she going through.

Celine's relationship with her husband reeks of grooming. He had her in his hands since she was like 12. I will always find him the icky one.

I agree with the groomer vibes. It reminds me of this recent article about the writer Jill Ciment.

Jill Ciment’s 1996 memoir “Half a Life” described her teenage affair with the man she eventually married. Her new memoir, “Consent,” dramatically revises some details.

Looking back on it five decades later, she realized there was something sinister about his conduct that she had failed to grasp before — an older man, a teacher in a position of power, taking advantage of his student, a teenager who craved his approval.
“In a marriage you have this shared mythology, and you have to share the mythology while your partner’s still alive,” Ciment said. “But once your partner dies, the story becomes yours.”

This is absolutely fascinating. I was required to take training for my job recently, and much of it centered around avoiding inappropriate care giver/child relationships. I kept thinking that this training is completely appropriate. It also is very likely something that would have never occurred when I was a child. In fact, dating a much older boy/man was almost a status symbol. One was viewed as "mature." In hindsight I shudder to think of what was happening. Who knows what occurred between them, but I fo feel sad for Celine.

As long as there are predators, they will prey on young girls who don't have the life experience to realize that a grown man who wants a romantic relationship with a sixteen-year-old is not a good guy. He's someone a woman his own age could probably see through and walk away from, so he chases someone who will look at him with stars in her eyes. He tells the girl that she's so mature, because let's face it, as teens, we all wanted to hear that.

Agreed. Celine was twelve when they met, René was a formative part of her growing up, and it's really creepy that he decided to date/marry her. I wonder if she ever looks back on things the way Jill Ciment is now, but that's for Celine to decide if she ever does feel that way or want to talk about it. And if she never comes to that point, well, it's not for us to say how she should feel. Having to re-examine your entire adult life isn't easy for anyone, and she's certainly got enough to worry about right now.

My goodness. Céline’s performance at yesterday’s Opening Ceremonies, I can’t describe in words. I was never a fan, was aware that she had an incredible voice, and her genre was never my cup of tea, same for my husband. She brought us both to tears.

Full out sobbed. When she started to sing but wasn’t on the screen yet, I turned to MrB and was like, that sounds like Celine Dion, is it? Could it be? Then she came onscreen and delivered such a powerhouse classic Celine performance. I cried the whole time. They cut to Kelly Clarkson afterwards and Kelly could not even speak.
