I think he seems pretty laid back. This is a funny clip from The Tonight Show of him promoting Spy Game. It's not an interview, the clip is called "Brad Pitt's shameless acts of self promotion." I think it shows that he has a nice sense of humor. When was the last time Brad was actually a guest on Leno or Letterman? Has he completely stopped doing those on his publicity tours? I can't even remember the last time he was on.

He rarely does late night talk shows. I think he appeared on Conan once and Leno once (not including that "Shameless Act of Promotion").

I agree with the others who say that Brad just looks dim, irrespective of whether or not he actually is stupid. It's just something in his eyes -- there's no spark or life in them. He has a perpetually blank/dazed expression and no intelligence radiates from him. Some people, you look at them, and they just look smart. Or at the very least, they don't look dumb. Brad looks dumb. That said, I don't think he's that smart in general. Actually, I would buy him doing well in school, but he doesn't strike me as an intellectual or someone who is capable of being a deep thinker. Many people have the smarts to do well in school but good luck trying to get any sort of original insight from them! I have yet to be impressed with the "insights" he gives in his interviews -- he always just seems to latch on to whatever the people around him say. When was the last time he expressed an original thought?

This might possibly be the most astute and succinct description of Brad Pitt evah. ITA.
I don't think Brad is an evil or bad person, but nor do I think he is any more interesting or unique or noteworthy than most people. He happened to be born with a certain middle-American brand of blonde, bland good looks (and I'm not being sarcastic - he's not my thing, but boy is pretty and I can objectively see this), but I highly doubt that without these looks he would be noteworthy at all. AJ and Jen Aniston are both, in their own way, competent actresses, but nothing special. I think Brad is generally terrible, and he only gets good when he plays himself. I.e. Tyler Durden. C'mon! That wasn't acting, y'all! That was just Brad Pitt, as he is. His abs were beautiful, he knows how to strut like a peacock, but I suppose at the end of the day I just don't fancy men who are conscious of their peacock-dom.
I remain convinced he would be languishing in an insurance-sales office in Iowa were it not for his looks and his luck re: the Thelma and Louise role.

I think it's a combination of a lot of things to explain Brad's success. His looks were important, no doubt about it, but a lot of hot actors have come and go and we don't hear about them anymore. I think it's a combination of looks, role diversity (he fought against the pretty boy cliche and did California, 12 monekys, etc), PR savviness, the obssession from the media with his relationships, good work ethics, international appeal that keeps him at the top paid lists, and talent. He also embodies that wholesome Midwestern boy image, the looks, the laid-back personality, the upbringing and the fact that he was never into heavy drugs or scandals like his peers at the time, River Phoenix, Johnny Depp, Robert Downey Jr, etc. The 90s were also a time when audiences were a lot more loyal to the actors once they liked them, it was probably the last generation who profited from that. There were no celebrity blogs, not that many tabs and generally less info about celebs than it is today which preserved an air of mystery around them.
