I just came back from watching the movie and it wasn't that bad. I actually wasn't planning to see it since I thought the trailer looked kind of cheesy and I hated Titanic but my friend has an extra ticket for the sneak peek. Anyway there were some unintentional funny moments that had the theater giggling. Like when they showed the huge wave heading towards the boat. It was supposed to look frightening but just came kinda out of nowhere. The ending is a bit abrupt but the action was pretty good. And plus Josh Lucas is hot.

I loved Titanic (and I'm only a little ashamed to admit I just bought the DVD special edition) and I think that's why I kind of want to see this movie. I'm simultaneously creeped out and fascinated by shipwrecks. I don't know... I'll probably wait for the DVD to save money, but I think I want to see it eventually. For some reason, tsunamis or water disasters or water don't scare me at all. I mean, if I were on a sinking ship (like the ferry that sank recently here), heck yes I'd be scared, but in principle, nah. I'm more fascinated than anything.
Although, I do have a question. From the trailers and such, it seems like the boat flips and then the people inside are okay for a while. How does that work? How does the water not go in? Can someone explain that? Put it in spoiler tags if necessary.

I saw the movie last night. It was entertaining. I never got that the character Richard Dreyfus played was supposed to be gay. Only old. Of course, I was paying attention to Josh Lucas and his daring feats of sexy bravery.

There was a reference, before the wave hit, to RD's partner, noted as "he," leaving him.
As to the movie, I was entertained. It was suspenseful and was was it was. No great shakes, but I don't think it's the worst of the worst. And Josh Lucas is stunnningly hot in this movie.

Yeah, I enjoyed it, too. It's a typical disaster movie, but having Josh Lucas in it definitely bumps it up (in my book, anyway). Overall, I'd give it a B-/C+.

I may have to rent this bad boy when it shows up on DVD. It may lose some translation on my tiny little TV. However if there's one thing this chick loves, it's daring feats of sexy bravery (I may have to add that to my sig line, if you don't mind).

A cheesy B movie. I would rather see the old one than see this turkey.

Wow. I so love the term "Daring feats of sexy bravery." The next time my boyfriend grabs my arm to keep me from tripping over something (which happens a lot) I'm going to say, "What a daring feat of sexy bravery! I am so hot right now..."
I'll probably see this eventually on DVD. I'd see it in the theatres if only they'd thought to put motha fuckin' snakes on the motha fuckin' cruise ship, though.

I just saw this at the drive-in. Pretty dumb. The original was a master of realism by comparison. Yes, the original was cheesy but at least I felt like I got to know all the characters: Gene Hackman's sexy preacher, Ernest Borgnine as the crusty cop, Stella Stevens as his ex-hooker wife, the teenage girl who conveniently wore hot pants under her dress, the know-it-all little brother, the British waiter, Shelley Winters as the fat ex-swimmer Jewish mama, her husband Grandpa George from Willy Wonka, Red Buttons and Noni, the band singer who had a creepy vibe going on with her brother, the Chuck Negron lookalike guitar player who had no lines before biting it.....
OTOH, in this one I didn't know any of the characters. Did the wave literally hit five minutes in? That's what it seemed like. I didn't even know the names of the characters and it seemed so disjointed. Matt Dillon's brother was in two scenes just so we knew he was a jerk, then he bites it. And Emmy Rossum's boyfriend? We sat there in the car like, "What happened to his leg?" They rescued him from being pinned under a huge scaffolding and five minutes later he's climbing and running with nary a limp. I thought Richard Dreyfuss (what happened to your career? You're Dr. Leo Marvin for Christ's sake!) was going to fulfill the older man/paternal figure to the hysterical girl that Red Buttons had with Noni in the original, but then she served her purpose and died right away.
I also never got an idea as to their strategy. In the original, there was enough dialogue to outline it several times: they were going to where the hull was thinnest and attempt to break through. What was the plan here? We at first thought Kurt Russelll turned off the propellors, but then they started up again the reverse way? So they could through a fire extinguisher in it and explode it? Huh? What happened to just turning them off?
