Saw it first thing this morning and LOVED it. I agree it was a bit long and the theatrical release could have been trimmed (but only if we got the full 2.5+ hrs on the DVD!) however I was enjoying it so much I didn't care.
And Mr. Collins was Cutler Beckett or whatever his name was. I was sitting there going - nah that's not him - OMG, it is him!!!
Loved the part where William told the crew to load up the rum and they all just started at him. Rum....mmmm - you know Ben & Jerry's has a banana and rum flavored ice cream - it's really, really good.

I saw this yesterday and just adored it. It was more fun than the first one in my opinion. I actually liked that they didn't make part 2 the "Jack Sparrow Show". The theater I saw it in LOVED this movie. There was tons of laughter and applause throughout the movie. And every showing of the movie was sold out for this weekend. Crazy.
I've pretty much decided the critics are useless after seeing this movie, The Break-Up, Mission Impossible 3, and Superman Returns this summer. The critics loved Superman and MI3, while hating The Break-Up and POTC2. My opinions were exactly the opposite. Superman and MI3 were both so boring, I'm not surprised that they underperformed.

I rather liked it- not as much as the first, but I went in looking for pirates and Johnny Depp, and I got what I wanted. My stupid local reviewer spouted off some nonsense about how this movie fails as an epic and that there's a difference between action and motion. WTF? Did he think he was watching Shakespeare in the Park presents POTC? It's a cheesy summer movie and all I wanted was to be entertained for 2 hours.

According to Box Office Mojo, it just made an estimated 132 million over the weekend.

While of course it's only natural to compare it to the first, I think if only people would stop doing that and enjoy it for the fun popcorn summer flick that it is meant to be, perhaps there would not be so many complaints.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!! Comparing it to the first, I think I liked the first one better. Can't say for sure just yet, but I think I did. I still really enjoyed DMC, and I will definitely be seeing it again at least once more in theaters. I have to say though, what the fuck was up with staying through the credits. I didn't get the point of that scene.

I had a total blast watching this movie, and I think it totally sucks that it's getting so much bad press... by no means was DMC perfect, but it certainly doesn't deserve to get reamed the way it has. The waterwheel fight made my jaw drop in a way that Jackie Chan movies generally do -- the whole "they just took it to a new level I didn't even realize existed" feeling. Awesome.
Random thoughts:
I was thrilled, thrilled, THRILLED to see that BARBOSSA IS COMING BACK!!!! Yeah, I'm one of the morons who clapped in the theater. I thought Geoffrey Rush was one of the best pirates ever in the first POTC, but lost in the wave of well-deserved Johnny Depp praise... so I'm glad we'll be seeing more of him! YAY!!
The plot was convoluted, particularly the beginning. The first ten scenes or so felt wildly unconnected. Once things got moving, though, I had no problem following it.
Points to the screenwriters for actually giving Will Turner Jr. a little more of a personality this time around. In the first film I thought he was a total cipher, now I think he's... less of a cipher.
Was it just me or was Jack Davenport rocking a Daniel Day-Lewis look as the movie went on?
And finally, I need to get back over to the Embarrassing Crushes thread, because DMC totally resurrected my crush on Stellan Skarsgard. Yes, even when he's wet and dripping and covered in barnacles, I find this guy hot. I need help.

Jack Davenport has a fantastic name. I always think that's the name of the character, not the actor.

I just got back from seeing this - boy am I glad I came and got my tickets an hour before the movie started. Completely packed and we got the best seats. I *LOVED* it. LOVED LOVED LOVED IT. I thought, from all the bad reviews, that this was going to be a P.O.S. But it wasn't. Far exceeded the first one. Loved the little love triangle. Loved Norrington. Was happy with the cliffhanger. The critics don't know what they're on about, as always. Buggers going in expecting it to be this awesome Oscar worthy film than for what it is. A fantastic summer blockbuster. It delivered. I will be seeing it agian.

I think it may actually exceed Box Office Mojo's estimates -- buzz here is pretty positive, the Cinemascore ranking is *very* good - if showings continue to be sold out throughout the day, there's no reason to think that Sunday won't bring in more than estimates. The day's only halfway over, right?
And because the buzz here is mostly of the "it delivers what a summer blockbuster should" variety, I'm posting what my aforementioned fav reviewer said of the first film: "One thing's for sure: "Pirates of the Caribbean" seems poised to give audiences something they're hungry for, and it's something they deserve."
That's all. </miranda>.
