I think it worked this time around because there was actual tension in the relationship this time. When we first met them, Will and Elizabeth were just depicted as being in love, no reason given, no real tension other than the mild impossibility of their love.

From what I've read they described Keith as a quintessential real life pirate. While Johnny simply played one and could turn that on and off, Keith's always on. He just is.

IIRC, Keith nailed his scenes within 2 or 3 takes. Everyone was expecting a lot more takes from him, but he came in and nailed them.

I also read that he was drunk the whole time he was filming. Not a huge shock I know, but impressive nonetheless that he was still that good.

As a friend of mine once said (about John Taylor): "All you did was add fifteen minutes to the fantasy. Now you have to bathe him first!"

I'll agree with the praise of Keith Richards. I was actually dreading his appearance because I thought 1) he'd be a terrible, terrible actor and 2) it'd be a so cheesy, nod-nod wink-wink aren't-we-funny-and-clever type of scene. But I really enjoyed how they handled him being in it and his restrained performance.
Question: How can Barbossa and Jack both be Pirate Lords in the Brethren? All the Lords are major captains, right? But the 1st movie established that they were never captains at the same time. Barbossa was Jack's 2nd until the mutiny, after which either Jack wouldn't have been considered a captain or not an important enough captain to make a Lord. And if Barbossa was a captain before becoming Jack's 2nd... I would think he'd never lower himself to become a 2nd. Both of them being important to the Brethren doesn't make any sense, considering the events of the first movie.
And regarding future sequels, I felt that the post-credit scene provides a great out for the writers to get around having Orlando and Keira in a 4th movie. Now that we know what happens to them in 10 years, the fourth movie can't really bring them together, or it would make that scene meaningless. I just think that scene's inclusion is particularly interesting knowing the Keira and Orlando both have expressed some reluctance about doing a 4th, even though Johnny and Gore are both up for it. And since the pre-credit ending shows a potential new adventure for Jack and Barbossa.. It seemed like a way to end their story without ending Jack's. Although, having read that maybe Will isn't cursed to be the Flying Dutchman captain for eternity (depending on how canon the deleted scene is), they do have a Will story they can do. Although, it would beg the question as to who would be the Flying Dutchman's captain if Will is free, since the Flying Dutchman always has to have a captain.
And if someone could point me to a high quality picture (especially if suited to being a desktop background *ahem*) of Flying Dutchman Will, I'd be eternally grateful.

AuroraStar, I was thinking about Keira and Orlando in the fourth movie. Theoretically they could still meet on the ship every so often and continue pirating until she has the baby. They said he could only go on land once every ten years, right? And Davy Jones was able to go on other ships so they could possibly spend time together in between then, right?

Not to mention the fact that Davy Jones was able to <<stand on land in a bucket of water. They could just have some sexy baths! Although someone pointed out upthread that Will had to ferry people to the land of the dead, unlike Davy Jones, so I guess he would be pretty busy.>>

Oh the dead can wait. They aren't going anywhere! I liked that bucket of water thing. I laughed and laughed. Pretty clever.
