LOL at Johnny not being in the courtroom for the verdict because of "work commitments." Quoting myself to say his "work commitments" were sitting in a pub in the UK watching the verdict and then taking pictures with fans (gross). link

Right verdict. I’m only surprised that the Waldman statement was found to be defamatory in the first place (Amber demonstrably lied over other claims and the jury found as much, so why was their roughing up the place and spilling wine what they didn’t believe?), and if they did, that given the evidence they didn’t go with a Meghan Markle nominal $1 amount. (Or $7 would have been poetic justice).
Essentially, while it wasn’t about the money, Depp has despite such slam dunk evidence that the jury clearly it was, had to pay more to Amber than vice versa, even with this verdict. Was the 7 million settlement and 7 million Amber legal fees in the divorce agreement or the UK defamation trial?
Also in their instructions why didn’t the jury know about the cap for punitive damages? That seems pretty basic. 5 million knocked down to 350,000 would have likely effected both the amount of compensatory damages due to Depp, as well as that 2 million due to Amber for the Waldman statement. It seems v odd that on the one hand the jury came back with a minute question about headline versus article (which I don’t see changed anything as one wasn’t less defamatory than the other), yet on the damages didn’t know such a relevant point and nor did the judge correct them and check if other amounts would have been adjusted had they known instead of amending it after they left.

Adam Waldman accused both Amber and her friends of conferring with a lawyer and a publicist and then trashing the apartment to claim Johnny had done it. I don't think there was evidence of any of that happening. The pictures I saw did not show an apartment that had been trashed - not by Johnny or anyone else. There was one broken vase and a small wine spill in the kitchen. Normal stuff. At one point in the trial, there were some pictures of Amber's spare bedroom that she used as a closet, and some of her clothing racks were on their sides, but nobody proved how that happened and that room was a big mess anyway. yet on the damages didn’t know such a relevant point and nor did the judge correct them and check if other amounts would have been adjusted had they known instead of amending it after they left. I don't think the jury is supposed to manipulate the damages that way. They are just supposed to decide what they think Johnny or Amber are owed. Compensatory damages would be based on how much income Johnny potentially lost because of the claim, and $10 million isn't even his full salary for one movie role, so it's interesting to me that they chose a relatively low amount.

I too thought the damages calculation didn’t make a lot of sense; low for Johnny since as you say his salary was much higher, and relatively overly high for Amber. Fair point about there not being enough evidence of the conspiracy/apartment trashing (though personally given the evidence against Amber on other things I’m still surprised they were quite so by the book there), but even if they found that didn’t happen, I don’t know where 2 mil came from. After all the Warner Bros executive was pretty clear and convincing that the salary hadn’t been effected one way or another and that they just weren’t too thrilled with Amber as an actress. Even if they felt they had to find for Amber on that particular claim, I’m surprised they didn’t make a point of awarding her just $1 a la Meghan Markle’s ‘win’. Anyone know why Fantastic Beast’s lost role and recasting with Mads was not part of the claim by Johnny’s lawyers, and why it was just Pirates? Not sure how to feel about him going to UK for the verdict. I was kind of digging the genuine camaraderie he, Ben, and Camille seemed to have, and it would have been nice to see that through and then jet off to celebrate.

He is apparently part of Jeff Beck's band and Beck is touring the UK right now. He's been on stage 3 or 4 nights since closing arguments.
I'm just curious if anyone had ever heard a rumor about Johnny Depp pushing Kate Moss down a flight of stairs during their relationship? I had never heard this, and I followed Johnny closely in the 90s. I knew he got arrested for trashing a hotel room, but the first time I heard about the stairs was when Amber briefly mentioned it on the stand. She said she'd heard this rumor throughout the 90s and 00s and claimed people told her about it directly (and she still married him?).

However, it is not uncommon that survivors of abuse will still support their abuser and mourn the end of the relationship even years later, and an abuser can be abusive to only one partner but not others in their lifetime. So far, she has categorically denied that the incident happened.

To Ladybug's question, I had never heard a rumor about the steps, only the story about Johnny trashing his room at the Mark Hotel, where property damage was the only accusation ever made. A quick search of usenet for "Depp Moss stairs" and "Depp Moss steps" for vintage gossip only yielded an item about Johnny and Kate appearing on the Cannes steps in 1998. However, it is not uncommon that survivors of abuse will still support their abuser and mourn the end of the relationship even years later, but so far she has categorically denied the incident happened. "Believe women" should apply here. Kate Moss knows what did and didn't happen to her. She enthusiastically testified on Johnny's behalf and I don't think it's because she's still under an abuse spell 28 years after the fact. Her BFF Naomi Campbell has also been vocal on social media, applauding Kate for speaking the truth, and I think it's pretty clear she doesn't believe that the relationship she witnessed going on with her best friend was abusive.

I watched Kate Moss's testimony and I believe her. She slipped on wet stairs and he carried her to their room and got her medical attention. However, Amber claiming this was a widely known rumor was new to my ears, and I've followed celebrity gossip for ages. Depp later testified that he'd told Amber about the incident with Kate. So maybe the rumor actually started with Amber? She twisted it to serve her story? That's why I asked if anyone else heard the rumor before the trial. I think Kate Moss was devastated for years about their breakup because she was deeply in love with him. Here's a list of all the celebrities who've liked Johnny Depp's post-verdict statement

Jason Momoa liked Johnny's victory statement, and he also liked Amber's heartbroken-I-lost statement.

Damn really? Disappointed in Momoa. He seems to be a decent no bs guy. Surprised to know he would like Amber’s ludicrously out of touch with reality attempt at still manipulating the narrative statement.
Apparently his ex and my girl crush Lisa Bonet loooaaathes Amber hehe.
I… don’t know what to make of the idea anyone could “not know what to make of” Kate Moss’s clear cut and credible own lived experience testimony that she slipped down the stairs. Is this a new strand of supporting women where one is determined to make cool as cucumber women out as Stockholmesque victims?
