I remember reading She Said and Catch and Kill all about the investigative journalism that busted the Me Too movement open. Jodi Kantor, Megan Twohey, and Ronan Farrow all took the women's claims seriously, but they had to find corroborating sources to back them up. They talked to people, gathered proof, found evidence. In some cases, there wasn't enough so the accounts of those women didn't make it into the books. There are journalistic standards and civil and criminal burdens of proof that have to be met. Otherwise you are destroying lives and careers based on little more than gossip. It went from "take these accusations seriously" to "believe all women, at all times, no matter what, even if it can't be proven true." That's not justice, that's revenge. I understand the desire for it after decades, centuries, millennia, etc., but I'd rather work toward justice. Amber did a real disservice to women who are legitimately suffering from abuse. And many believe that she did suffer abuse at the hands of Johnny Depp. But the stories she told on the stand begged belief when you looked at other evidence. Some may say she was lying outright or at least vastly exaggerating what actually happened to make Johnny look like an abuser. This is my opinion based on watching days of her testimony, cross examination, other witness testimony, and hearing both her and JD on tape. I didn't dismiss her claims out of hand. They just could not be backed up with credible evidence, IMO. I believed her when her claims came out, but listening to her testimony in detail made me change my mind. Doesn't mean that I think JD is some saint or wounded starchild. This drives home the failings of the Washington Post and the ACLU in publishing Amber's original editorial. They did NOT take the steps to corroborate claims like the NY Times did with Kantor and Twohey. They'll hide behind the excuse that she didn't name names, but it's a weak defense. Whether it was because they were trying to do a favor to the ACLU and figured they verified it, or because they were trying to catch up to the Times, they ran to publish without doing the proper legwork. The challenge with the claims that are reported is that while often times publications DO follow standard journalistic practices and verify information and make sure they can back it up, others do not. So with the exception of rare cases where books are published later telling the story behind the story, readers are left unsure of what has been verified and what has not.

Yeah, I think this just shows that Depp thinks he's bullet-proof, and I'm just waiting for a comeuppance, but I'm also not holding my breath.

I was dumbfounded when I saw it and came here to post. I just did not know what to immediately make of it and had to process the fact that he's up there, publicly, on television, making these kind of comments. Because everything was just one big joke. Yikes.

Quite the leap from wronged party to ha ha isn't domestic abuse hilarious.

This sounds like something that would have happened in the 1990s, not now.
Anyway, Depp wears his comeuppance on his face.

Hell, forget the 1990s, there was criticism in the 1980s about The Honeymooners for its running joke of Ralph hitting Alice. After The Slap TM at this year's Oscars, it's both very tone-deaf and completely expected from MTV for anyone to watch the VMAs anymore. Seriously, that awards show is deader than vaudeville; in the 1990s, it was a marker of the start of school and those actually watching the show because MTV played music videos (which there was criticism in the 1990s that MTV played too few videos!). Depp is aging like milk in the Phoenix sun, but there will still be women who don't care.
