I saw him on Oprah and he looked so pale! They had wine in the show and I think he actually needed some to get through the interview. I read somewhere that he had alcohol addiction during his earlier days and I think he experimented with drugs too, but I've never heard of him going to rehab. I wonder what he's like to work with if he had said habits and took it with him to work. I don't ever recall a complaint from his co-workers.

Oh, and is it true that he gave River Phoenix the drugs he fatally overdosed on that night? I have heard that before--not that I'm blaming River's death on Johnny even if that was true.

No. River was at the Viper Room for less than half an hour and Johnny was on stage playing guitar the whole time. It was a dealer who was sort of notorious on the club scene at the time who took River into the bathroom and gave him some bad Persian Brown (which was really just the final straw because River was already really loaded). One of River's friends noted that the same dealer was back at work at a different club the very next day. Johnny says he didn't even know River, btw.

Johnny has said the worst he ever was when he was doing What's Eating Gilbert Grape (very depressed and drinking heavily) and so he was a little surprised that Lasse Hallstrom wanted to work with him again on Chocolat since he'd been a little "moody". But I've never heard actually heard any of his coworkers say anything bad about him, including Hallstrom. They all seem to adore him. In fact I think Vincent Gallo is a little in love with him.

I found this quote from Darlene Cates (the 500-pound mother in Gilbert Grape) about working with Johnny:

''Johnny is a very gentle person and very quiet and very respectful and he was always aplologising to me.I mean,I wouldn't even be working some days and he would come and say to me'Man,I want you to know how much I hated having to say all those things about you or about your character' ..And I felt kind of silly because he's the actor.I said 'You were saying them about Momma'...'Well,I hated it', he'd say..'I just hated it, especially as I know you'.

The word "sweet" comes up when people talk about him.

I thought he was hot in POTC, thats a good look for him minus the gold teeth. I love Johnny but he did look pale on Oprah, the suit was too big he was wearing and the hair was just all over the place. He needs dressing tips.

Yeah, it was just that it was Johnny's club. I think he'd met River, like, twice before - they didn't really know each other, though I read in an interview later that Johnny had thought River seemed quite sweet.

But the fact of a death in (technically outside) his club was a huge shock to Johnny nevertheless, and I think he was seriously considering selling his share in the club afterwards. He started wearing a skull ring afterwards, to remind him of the death.

River had cocaine, heroin, valium and weed in his system that night, according to the coroner. He was very troubled indeed. But him being in Johnny's club at his last hour was just an accident of circumstance.

That's so sad. Poor guy must have not known up from down. And now, supposedly, his brother is in rehab.

I think I'd freak out if I was in Johnny's position. I've always wondered if it had any affect on his drug/alcohol use.

Wow. It's funny you should say that. Last night, for some reason I'm still trying to figure out, he and Tim Burton were being interviewed between South Park episodes on Comedy Central - I guess as some sort of sponsorship of the movie. Anyway, I was shocked to see him looked really tanned. Like, unnaturally so and kept thinking, "Eww...that looks really weird." However, it did not detract from his infinite hotness.

the Viper Room

I saw a segment years ago on a Celebrity Justice kind of show about one of the owners of the Viper Room with Johnny. The owner disappeared off the planet -- and it was suggested foul play was involved, and I walked away from the story belieiving the show had implied the Johnny was being evasive about talking to the police about what happened. Never, EVER saw anything about the story again. Anyone have any information on that?
