I was thinking he looks like Edward Scissorhands - I know - still Johnny but a very specific look.

Jynni, I was actually thinking that as I typed my post. I just didn't add it for some reason. It's the black hair and clothes combined with the pale skin...combined with the fact that I think it is supposed to look like JD anyway.

He looked kind of strange in the Oprah interview. Until I read the above, I hadn't even realized it was him. He seemed to be smirking at her. (Not that Oprah doesn't deserve a good smirking...)

OTOH Kate didn't really look like herself either.

Some folks definitely think JD played Wonka with a FUBAR flare:

The longish black hair. The pale skin. The ornate suit jacket. The--how should we say?--less than traditional adult male speaking voice.

That is fabled candymaker Willy Wonka as embodied by Johnny Depp in director Tim Burton's new take on the children's classic Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

One problem: "I think the casual viewer is going to see Michael Jackson."

Although Johnny disagrees:

And, according to Depp, who openly copped to stealing riffs from rocker Keith Richards for his turn as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, it is absolutely not what the actor had in mind when he was conjuring the eccentric first brought to the big screen by Gene Wilder in 1971's Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Children-show hosts like Captain Kangaroo and Mr. Rogers, these are the innocuous sorts who inspired Depp's Wonka, he has said.

"Everyone is entitled to think what they want," Depp said last week in a news conference in Nassau, Bahamas, "even while being violently wrong."

I listened to the movie clips before I read anything about this, and to me it sounded very clearly like Johnny had combined the voices of Mister Rogers and Carol Channing. An amusingly creepy combination, if ever there was.

This won't be a popular opinion, but I think he's ugly. Not overrated, but ugly, and ugly by his own merits with all the weird ass clothes he wears, and his weird personality, and his freaky ass Willy Wonka interpretation.

He just looked so gross at the Oscars this year, and I never cease to be shocked how popular he is.

Oh, and is it true that he gave River Phoenix the drugs he fatally overdosed on that night? I have heard that before--not that I'm blaming River's death on Johnny even if that was true.
