I agree jynii. MrB and I spent the whole ride home talking about the plot holes but I still had nightmares last night. And I still hobbled thru Kroger after the movie because I sat so still thru the movie that I cramped in both legs walking out!

I agree about the script being terrible. This biggest problem with this film was that it was rushed, including the screenplay. It was greenlight all of a sudden in spring/summer of 2004 for a June 2005 premiere. Originally it was meant to premire in 2007.
They just didn't take the time to develop the script, and to shoot the scenes. Spielberg may naturally be quick when he's shooting, but with this one he sacrificed quality.
Also, I find it so strange that people were really scared by the film. I think it may have something to do with the audience you see it with. My audience seemed to think half the movie was just silly. So that probably affected me even though I didn't know it. I mean, watching Tom Cruise get sucked up a giant alian buthole makes me laugh not shake in my seat.

I was very nervous throughout the movie, I'll admit it. I was rather freaked out and rather frightened.
It wasn't so much the thrills 'n chills that Steven produced themselves so much I think, as the impotence of the population to help themselves or their situation. No one could do anything! Even SuperHeroTomCruise was reduced to just wandering around looking shell-shocked and starving.
No-one was coming to the rescue, and everything that everyone knew was gone. It was the Apocolypse, and it wasn't some religious thing....it was just seeing how a potential Apocolypse of any modern sort would affect people like me that scared the hell out of me. Brought me right back to those horrible days of the Eighties when we were all convinced that there was going to be a Nuclear War and there was all those movies like Where The Wind Blows.
And then I woke up the next morning and London had been blown apart. So yeah, I was FREAKED.

Late to the party as usual, I watched this the other night. What a load of shit. The only thing that scared me were the giant plot holes. What if this becomes a trend for script writers? "Who cares if there are plot holes so big you could lose An SUV in 'em? The movie stars [ insert overexposed celebrity name here]!"

I liked the movie, and thought the parts with Tom Cruise and Tim Robbins were really well done. Even the alien butthole scenes where Dakota Fanning is holding onto Cruise, and the scene where the boy went into the battle and Cruise was trying to stop him. I guess I'm the type to ignore plot holes if the acting is good. The end was silly, but that's Spielberg. The whole world is destroyed...let's go home, where the entire family survived.

I'm just glad I saw it in the theater. It was fairly scary on the big screen, but I started thinking about all the stupid stuff as soon as the lights came up and I can see where it would just look silly in your living room.

I misread this at first to be " fairy scary" and I figured, well of course! Tom Cruise is in it. Then I read it again.

Edited because I realized that I pretty much said the same thing at the top of the page (granted that was a year ago and I didn't remember writing it - but no one wants to read it twice ;D)
Anywhooo.....
I really think it was robbed of an Oscar for the special effects. The movie looks incredible.

I'm glad I saw this movie on HBO, if I'd seen it in the theater I would have demanded my money back. The aliens looked silly, like rejects from an X File episode. Tom Cruise getting sucked up that buthole was hysterical and what was the point of Tim Robbins?
