I don't think that Mr. Darcy would have been attracted to an Elizabeth that was mostly a "hot mess" who put on a dress for a dance occasionally. I think he was attracted to an Elizabeth who was a lady at all times, who showed independence both physically and emotionally and intellectually. Oh WORD. Darcy's attraction to Elizabeth was definitely based on her superiority of mind. I believe he saw her as his intellectual and moral equal, if not equal in birth and property. That's what set her apart from any other woman he knows. If he wanted a woman with a big dowry, he could have had Miss Bingley or Anne De Bourgh. If he wanted a "hot mess", he would have warmed up to Lydia. What he did want is a woman with wit and ideals, intellegent enough to think on her own and bold enough to stand up to her beliefs, but who is still a lady. I've always seen Darcy as a bit conservative and very interested in social decorum. If Lizzie was too avant-garde, he would have looked down on her.

So I'm in the vast minority, but I don't care about realisticness to the era and author and I'm really looking forward to this, regardless of my Working Title hate! I rather enjoyed the unfaithful Olivier version in spite of my general indifference to Greer Garson, because it was a fun, enjoyable little romantic comedy. If this is the same I'll be more than happy. Plus Matthew Macfadyen on the big screen- yay! So talented.

Gritty? Keira Knightely? Pigs in kitchens? I don't care. I loved the trailer. I'm a huge history and Austen fan. I'm so there dude. You'd have to put in robots to keep me away.
And doesn't the guy who plays Darcy (McFadden?) look a little like John Cusack? Swoon.

I will definitely see this the first weekend it opens. This I will see this as it is SO my kind of movie.
OK, I have been doing a bit of nit-picking, and I realise that it is only based on some press and the trailers, but I am excited to see what they do with the story. Even if they don't measure up to the BBC version, it is like chocolate...it might not be the best chocolate, but I still can enjoy it.
After all, I thought the casting of Renee Z. as Bridget was sacrilegious, but I thoroughly enjoyed that movie.

Knightley "uglied up"Ugh. Wright, you moron, Elizabeth was a local beauty. The Bennets were not poor. Why screw with the text? You want a "plain heroine" and a depressing social situation, go with Jane Eyre - then you'd actually manage to be faithful to the book in question.

"Fine eyes" . . . "local beauty" . . . "one of the handsomest women of my acquaintance" . . . God I hate Hollywood.

This movie is going to suck. And probably blow.

Wow. Just wow. It's mind-boggling how much they don't understand the book. I think that the director just saw one of the existing adaptions and thought "Hey, I could do this! But since they're destitute, every Bennet should look frumpy and unkempt. That girl who plays Lizzie does nothing for me - I'll get an uglier one! And there should be pigs in the kitchen. With big testicles! Ha! Gold, my friends, pure gold." How else could Wright miss how pretty Elizabeth is supposed to be?

If they messed up on that, I also wonder how much they also messed up on. No doubt they will just gloss over what happened with Lydia. They don't seem to realize that back then, eloping or sleeping with men that you weren't married to was a huge disgrace.
