I'm reviving this dead thread for a bit --
Remember how this was considered sort of a flop because it didn't make 100+ million the first weekend or whatever? (It actually grossed substantially more overseas)
6.5 million DVDs sold in the first week-- which is equivalent to $100 million -- and a new record. That's amazing and good to know that the filmmakers are having the last laugh.

See, I thought that as well, but even if it was 210 million + 100 million (or more) for marketing, it made 330 overseas and the domestic gross would be pure profit. So I think it did better than given credit for. I just don't understand how something that grosses a half a billion dollars is considered a "flop."
I think LOTR was an aberration, if anything.
