I liked it. Didn't love it by any means--the writing was kind of sloppy, arbitrarily using fairy-tale logic to fill plot holes, Damon was meh, and Gilliam did the "story about stories" thing way better in Baron Munchhausen. But I was entertained.
And, gawd help me, I kept giggling at Jonathan Pryce's over-the-top French mannerisms.

I saw alot of Monty Python in the movie, but it did not save it for me. It just seemed very muddled. Did Gilliam have final cut?
And all the bugs, yeesh! What the hell was up with all the bugs?

No, according to Gilliam, because the budget was so high ($80 million). Miramax only grants final cut to films that are budgeted at a few million dollars, and then it means nothing because they'll blackmail the filmmaker and threaten to never release the movie or sell it to HBO if the filmmaker doesn't make the changes they want. Miramax interfered a lot in Grimm, but I heard Gilliam say he's happy with the final cut. I didn't believe him.

I'll probably rent it eventually for a rainy Sunday afternoon. I love garish special effects. Plus, ever since Matt Damon sneered at actors who claim to do their own stunts the guy has grown on me, and I want to support him.
You know, when the trailer was coming on every 2 minutes there was a part that had me really confused: The trees are writhing and the wind is blowing and Matt Damon seemed to be shouting in this fierce, dramatic voice, "The Brothers Grimm do not hear you!"
Once I figured out he was saying "...do not fear you!" the theatricality of it made much more sense.
(I'm notoriously hard of hearing and have to ask people to repeat themselves constantly. I've been so tempted to shout melodramatically, "Sister Bonsai does not hear you!" but I'll never get up the nerve... Plus, no one would get it. It's my own little thing.)

I think this was trying to be Sleepy Hollow. It did not succeed, but that's okay. (That whole queen thing at the end was kind of cool IMO so I'm willing to let a lot of things slide)

As ashamed as I am to admit it, I got nightmares from this. Yes, I know, I scare easily. But the scene with the fiery witch did me in. I kept seeing that for three nights. Slept with the lights on.
