I know the US and Great Britain are different countries with different laws (duh) but it surprises me that no legal attempts by family or the ex were made to get Lila Grace away from Kate during her Doherty days and cocaine scandal. Unlike Britney, who was lambasted pretty hard.

I'm puzzled too. I understand the reasons everyone has listed but logically how can a woman who obviously has a serious drug problem (at one point is engaged to a man with a serious drug problem) be allowed to raise her child unsupervised in some way. I really hope it is true that Kate's mom lives with them.

I honestly don't think she has a serious drug problem, I think she is a heavy recreational drug user. Lots of drug addicts and people dating drug addicts have and raise children. If we were start taking away people kids because we think they have a serious drug problem, that would lead to all kinds of problems; namely, what to do with the kids? who defines "serious"? And will that include Alcoholics, prescription drug abusers, and their ilk as well.

"Heavy" recreational drug use is a problem or she wouldn't have gone to rehab. And considering she was dating that human petri dish, Pete Doherty, that alone signifies a HUGE problem.

I suspect she only went to rehab to assuage the fears of her big name contracts - and it worked! All those contracts that she was on the verge of losing when the cocaine pictures came out "forgave" her after she left rehab and her career continued on its merry way.

I also don't think she has a serious drug problem in so far as taking drugs interferes with her day to day existence or her health. She is on top of her career with a reputation for always being on time and always acting like a professional. She still looks good. She might be a fiend in her off time and I can imagine she wouldn't win any mother of the years awards but she seems in control of her life, even when she was with that idiot, Pete Doherty.

I'm stunned that Kate Mess still has custody, not to mention other parents trusting her with their kids. :-/Who's sitting for them next? Naomi Campbell? Michael Jackson?

Kate went to rehab once before in 1998 for alcohol (supposedly) and depression. At that time, no one officially knew she had a problem & she went of her own volition, so I don't believe that she's a happy person who just happens to use a ton of substances (like maybe Keith Richards and...well, that's about it.) She has a problem.

And I do think there is an obvious negative impact of her substance use on her life. For one thing, she physically looks like hell and I think her career has already started to suffer (despite the post-cocaine "We love you Kate!" boost). Her relationships are still a mess, as if making up/breaking up with Pete Doherty wasn't already a miserable enough way to spend three or four years of her life.

And there are tons of ways substances may have messed up her life in private that we don't know about. A lot of alcoholics/addicts hit rock bottom without losing their job or their kids.
