Even the critics who say that it's manipulative and as corny as the proverbial Kansas in August, seem to love this film for it's message, its well-earned emotional impact and the artistry of it's actors, particularly twelve year-old Keke Palmer's work as Akeelah.
Richard Roeper even suggests that Keke - despite her age - deserves consideration for major awards because of her very sturdy work in the lead role.
And personally, I can't wait to see Laurence Fishburne playing a professorial hottie.

The BUST review said it was the montagiest montagerie to ever montage, but I think also concluded with the powerful and emotional impact. I am also a dorkus maximus for the Starbucks tie-in promotional stuff.

I fully support the weird geek spelling trend that has taken over the nation. Between Bee Season, this movie and the Putnum County Spelling Bee musical, it's all about the bee. And frankly, that weirds me out a little. But I support it.

I am irked with Starbucks, however.
They have all these $50 dollar spelling bee words posted throughout the store (publicity for movie)... but fail to tell us the meaning of the words!
On other fronts, I am jazzed to see how Starbucks continually bucks the standards (music industry and movie promotions).

I cannot wait for this movie. I've already made plans to surprise my daughter and take her out of school early... for a "dr's appointment" so we can see it at the brand new AMC that opens down the street from our house. I'm so excited .... yes I am a geek thank you!

This movie looks like a very sweet, uplifting story and how can you fault that? I can't wait to see it.

awww Thank you! My daughter will agree with you for about a minute!
I really can't take credit for it. I stole the idea from a parenting mag. It had ideas on how to stay close to your daughters during puberty. So once a year I break her out of school and we do something special just the two of us. This year it will be Akeelah- Yay!

So far, it's at 83 percent at Rotten Tomatoes, 93 percent in Cream of the Crop.
I hope this film is a hit.

I can't wait to see it either. It looks very sweet and funny and I have this strange fascination with spelling bees. I loved the documentary Spellbound, for example.
