He looks like a ghoul in the second one. And she looks her best there (I think). Had I been her, I would have been like, what happened to you, dude, you used to be hot.

He had such a baby face in the first one, and then he aged like 20 years in the space of 9. It was kind of jolting. Hard drugs? Too much smoking combined with too much alcohol and sun? Bad genes?

I think it was a mix of drugs (of both the legal and illegal kinds) and he was in the midst of his divorce with Uma at the time of filming Sunset. He wears the most hideous shirt in that movie too. Thank Xenu he wore a jacket over it for almost all of the scenes.

I finally saw Before Midnight. I was spoiled for what reviews called the "epic fight" in the hotel room, so I was actually kind of underwhelmed by it. I expected a lot more yelling and was surprised how calmly Jesse handled the whole thing. All in all it was a wonderful meditation on getting older and long-term relationships.

I hope this movie isn't forgotten come Oscar time. I fear Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy will both be overlooked because their performances are so natural that it doesn't even look like acting.

I just caught the first one a few nights ago and it's still remarkable how many words, emotions, and tiny gestures poured out of them effortlessly on a never-ending single camera shot. I could name several Oscar-winning performances that were not as believable.

I finally watched Before Midnight. I enjoyed it but Before Sunset is still my favorite. I love that installment. A great trilogy.

The beginning of Before Midnight left me a little drowsy, but the last hour hit home. Nicely done.
It's a privilege to be nearly exactly the age of these characters and to watch their relationship age and change in real time over the past few decades. I would love more installments in their 50s and 60s.

Julie Delpy has said that the final installment of the Before series would be basically a remake of Amour!

Congratulations to Julie Delpy for her Golden Globe nod. I can't imagine anyone considers these movies to be comedies but if that was the only way to get her name in, then so be it. It's still a travesty it wasn't nominated for Best Picture.
