And the "spit like a man" scene, she just keeps repeating his name -- "No, Jack -- Jack, no! Jack! Jack!" Hee.
I watched bits and pieces of it this weekend after not having scene it since it first came out and was disturbed not only by my total recall of the dialogue but also because ... I didn't think it was bad. The special effects held up pretty well, too, which is impressive (didn't it come out almost 10 years ago?). Except at the begininng, the camera pans along the ship, and it looks a little fake. But just a little. The dolphins looked kind of cheesy, too. But most of the effects still looked good.

As much as I love the movie, I admit, I cringed during the "Spit lahk a mayan!" scene. I mean, sure, I totally get it that Rose was ahead of her time -- because there are always people who are ahead of their time. Otherwise, nothing would ever change. Still, did it have to be spitting...?
One time my boyfriend and I were on a whale watch. Those of you who have been on whale watches know that the boat ride out to whale territory can be interminable. Anyhow, my boyfriend and I amused ourselves by standing at the prow of the boat and howling at one another "Jack!" "Rose!" "Jack!" "Rose!" Then after thoroughly entertaining ourselves, we turned to find we had quite an amused audience standing in back of us.

I don't get the hate for this movie. I loved it. I don't think it was deserving of all those oscars, though.
If it hadn't done so well at the box office...people wouldn't be criticizing this still, I don't think.

For a while, it was "in" to hate Titanic. So everyone had this huge backlash and the hate flowed. Now, I think it's fashionable to go against the grain and declare you liked it.
I liked it. I didn't think it was perfect but it was a truly awesome spectacle. A movie you HAVE to see on the big screen. And I did that....five or so times.

Me too. And the guy I was dating at the time cried like a little girl. And, yes, it really was a spectacle -- an absolutely gorgeous movie.
I remember knowing people who would have "Titanic" viewing parties. By the time it had been on video for a few months, I'd seen it a bazillion (give or take a few) times. The Boy and I were just friends at the time, and he gave me the video for my birthday or something, but I never (to this day) watched it, because I had the movie literally memorized from seeing it so many times. I caught snippets of it over the weekend, though, and I TiVoed it for later viewing -- I can finally enjoy it again, I think.
I remember watching it in my friend's dorm room and getting furious with him for making some crack about how Leo would never be able to really haul Kate back over the railing -- implying that she was fat. I watched that scene, and it does look implausible, but only because he's such a skinny twerp. A really cute, skinny twerp, but a twerp nonetheless.
I got very excited watching it on Saturday because during the party in third class, you get a glimpse of one of my favorite bands, Gaelic Storm (portraying, you guessed it, the steerage band). You can definitely see one of the former members -- the camera lingers on him for a second -- and the side of the lead singer's face. Since I've met those guys dozens of times, I was all a-squee -- "Hey! I know those guys, and they're in the biggest blockbuster of all time!"
I love the party scene. It never fails to crack me up with Rose gets doused in the face with beer and just laughs about it.

When this comes on cable, my husband intones, "Do you want to go back to Titanic?" Works every time. We just sit around and crack on the CGI (which looked fake even back when it was released in theaters), the dialogue, and the fact that it has Bill Pullman. I drool over the clothing. Sites like this sell reproductions, and I find myself wondering if I could wear, say, Rose's black and white boarding suit to work. With the hat.

I watch it every. single. time. it's. on. TV. I call up IMDb on my computer and try to catch all the mistakes, like the Baja scenery in the background that didn't quite make it out of the final cut. How sad is it that I watch movies now JUST so I can catch the continuity errors and blatant mistakes? I even do it in "Out of Africa", which I love love love.

I saw it twice on the big screen, something I very rarely do with movies. Titanic is all about the hubris and our inability to learn what the Greeks taught us 2500 years ago. Unsinkable! They were just begging for the gods to plonk that iceberg in the way. So I was totally into the epic sweep of the Technology Is Our Friend story and I did my best to ignore the featured human story...Jack! Rose! Jack! Rose!... it was just an excuse for three hours of neato special effects showing the human race stubbing its toe once again. I couldn't watch it on TV unless I had a SONY 3,000 inch big screen.

About Rose not telling her mother she was alive...I think we were supposed to see how cold it was of her not to be willing to go back with the boat (she kept silent) to those still in the water, when she knew her daughter could be out there.

Bill Paxton, woman! Bill Paxton! But that is honkin' hilarious.
I was 10 or so when this flick came out so I fell for it hook line and sinker. I gotta admit, I still like it to this day. And amen to Tommy-the-Irish-guy love. I was always sad that he didn't get any action on the boat -- even Jack's pal Super Mario got that cute little Nowegian gal.
