Well, I'm not sure of you've ever heard of this movie. It's a little indie flick with no famous actors and a first-time director. And it's about this ship? That hits an iceberg or something? And there are people dyin'? Watch the trailer here!Sorry. I love this film I can't help it. I know it's not perfect and that many people hate it but come on . There's Kate and Leo, and Kathy Bates and Spy Daddy. There's little Ioan Gruffudd and an awesome Billy Zane. And the music people, the music!! Oh, and Kate is so freaking beautiful! Leo never looked better! It has this famous little scene (pic not from the film though) as well as this hilarious one in it. And after almost ten years it's still the highest grossing movie of all time (worldwide!). By the way, that trailer totally makes it look like Rose is about to fall off the Titanic during the sinking when really it's the scene when Rose and Jack first meet (when she was about to jump). *sigh* Yes, I'm sad. And to make things even worse, here's Celine. *runs*

OMG! Did you know it was based on a true story! I thought Kate's wardrobe was gorgeous, but the best summary to the entire movie I've ever read was: "It sank. There, I saved you 3 hours of your life."

Leo just can't be a heartthrob to me so I watched the movie cheering for hot skanky Billy Zane. Even at the end once Leo falls into the icy water and Billy's running around looking for Kate I'm thinking "There's hot billy! Stand up! Stand up dummy!" Is he nice? Nah, but he's hot. And rich. And he has the added benefit of not looking like a 10 year old boy.
I went and saw this with some friends in college and one of my friend just sobbed and sobbed. I sort of started to lose respect for her . . .

I love this movie and I'm only a little ashamed to admit it. I own the three-DVD special edition. I'm not particularly enamoured of the plot, but the costumes! The music! The sets! It's just so gorgeous. I start to lose interest after they hit the iceberg, because I'm far more interested in the stuff before. And I was 13 when it came out so I was obsessed with it for about eight months.

I guess this is my unpopular movie opinion but I hate hate hate hate hate hate LOATHE this movie with the fire of a thousand super-nova-ing suns. I hate this one more than Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon which is way up on my "Pretentious movies that I hate" list.
I mean, I can understand why people like it, but my sister saw this about 15 times when it was in the theater. She and everyone else waxed on and on about how incredible a movie it was and how great it was and how wonderful it was and so forth and so on until I wanted to puke because, dude, it was a squishy romance with starcrossed lovers and some neat FX. It wasn't the second coming or anything like that.
Oh, and don't get me started on Celine... Just hearing the theme song to this movie makes me twitch, break out in hives, and start smashing random things. There is only one worse movie theme song known to man--the horrific You Light Up My Life, the first few bars of which will make an entire generation scramble for the exits faster than the audience in a K-Fed concert.

I'm so glad I found my people! I don't dislike the movie, but I do dislike Leo in it. Which made me very unpopular in 1997, when everyone loved Leo. Billy Zane was unreasonably hot in the movie.
Guilty confession: someone sliced together dialogue from the movie with the Celine Dion song and it played on the radio constantly. I loved it.

I think that's actually the most popular opinion now.
This should probably go in the TC thread, but I went to a Celine Dion concert because I loved the song from the movie. In my defence, I was 13 or 14. That's Titanic's prime target audience! Fortunately, I think this experience immunized me to the boy band/girl band/bubblegum pop craze that started around the same time or shortly thereafter.
I still listen to the soundtrack pretty frequently, though. The score is awesome.

I've never seen it and will go to my grave without doing so. I mean, of course I've seen clips, but the film actively sucks any interest in the history dry. I have seen the CG of the guy falling onto the propeller blades, like, about eleventy thousand times, since a friend was responsible for that. His gag reel involved goofy noises -- like farts, bells and a-ooogah! sounds -- when the poor sod hits the blade.
And Celine Dion always sounds like she hasn't the faintest clue what the English words mean when she sings.

My favorite scene was when Jack is invited by Cal to join them for dinner and you can tell Cal is doing it out of malice because he fully expects Jack to make a fool out of himself and basically show how in over his head he is. I liked how the movie avoided the cliche of the fish out of water doing something klutzy and "comical" like knocking a glass of wine into someone's lap or any other number of movie cliche faux pas. But he not only handled himself with aplomb but he pretty much charmed the whole table (except for evil Cal, of course).
I just loved the end where (my interpretation) both the steerage people and the "upper class" people who died in the sinking are all waiting for Rose to join them. My feeling was that she was meant to die that night as well, and so they've been waiting for her.
What can I say, I generally love the big crowd pleasers. In fact, I'm a definite member of the crowd that studios are out to please.

The dialogue? Absolute shit. But dear Lord, Kate is pretty. I haven't seen it in years, but I still remember all her costumes. I cannot believe Leo didn't die of shame filming the "king of the world" bit. Oh, I'm cringing for him. But not too hard, since it made him filthy rich (well, rich-er) and ridiculously famous. The "spit like a man" scene also makes me die inside for both Kate and Leo.
Maybe I'll dig that out and watch it tonight. I have it -- wait for it -- on video. The Boy got me a bootleg copy of it when it first came out. That is hilarious to me now.
